Hollywood is known for its celebrity romance rumors, but this one is pretty strange. On Wednesday, Scarlett Johansson gave a statement to The Hollywood Reporter denying claims that she ever “auditioned” to date Tom Cruise after his split with Nicole Kidman nearly two decades ago. The rumor is bizarre not only because of the content, but because of the timing. Why is this something she has to address in 2018?

Apparently, on Wednesday morning, former Scientologist Brendan Tighe went on Megyn Kelly Today, where he talked about his experiences working as part of Cruise’s security detail around the time of Cruise’s divorce from Kidman. Tighe claims that he found reports of women who auditioned to date Cruise and that Johansson’s name was among them. Uh, what?
“The very idea of any person auditioning to be in a relationship is so demeaning,” Johansson told THR. “I refuse for anyone to spread the idea that I lack the integrity to choose my own relationships. Only a man aka Brendan Tighe would come up with a crazy story like that.”
Tighe said that Johansson’s name was the only one he recognized, but he contradicted that claim by bringing up Erika Christensen. “Another actress, Erika Christensen, had to disconnect from Scarlett Johansson because it didn’t go well. That was in that report,” he said. Sounds like Tighe can’t quite keep his story straight.
The Hollywood Reporter added that the Church of Scientology also denies Tighe’s claims. They quoted Karin Pouw, the international spokesperson, who said, “Brendan Tighe was a Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization security guard/night watchman from 2002 to 2009. The ‘access’ he boasts of having was largely limited to viewing security cameras from a guard booth. He was removed from that position for dereliction of duty.”

The outlet also notes that audition processes for Cruise’s relationships have been rumored for years. One thing’s for sure: Scarlett Johansson has no time for these demeaning claims. We’re glad she so elegantly shot them down.
