On Tuesday, Katharine McPhee and David Foster’s engagement took headlines by storm. As surprising to some as these two getting engaged might be, just wait until you hear about one of their past connections.

Per E! News, McPhee and Foster first met on her season of American Idol in 2006. But that’s not the shocking link between these two we’re talking about. Are you ready for this? As pointed out by Us Weekly, Foster played piano at McPhee’s first wedding to Nick Cokas. Say what, now?

At the time of McPhee and Cokas’ marriage in 2008, People magazine shared photos from their wedding, and in one image, you can see Foster on the piano. As reported by People, he tickled the ivories as she sang Natalie Cole’s “Unforgettable.” Cokas also serenaded McPhee, but it’s unclear if Foster played piano for him too.

Whatever the case, it’s definitely shocking to hear Foster was not only in attendance at McPhee’s first wedding, but that he actually performed. Granted, she probably thought of Foster after they met on American Idol. Plus, he’s an accomplished music producer and songwriter. But to think about him playing at her first wedding and now they are getting married to each other — it’s definitely something.
All that said, it’s important to remember McPhee’s wedding was 10 years ago, so a lot has changed since then. Both she and Foster have grown and experienced life separately. McPhee and Cokas divorced in 2016. Foster was previously married four times with his latest marriage to former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Yolanda Hadid ending in 2015.

McPhee’s rep confirmed their engagement to multiple outlets Tuesday. The happy couple also announced their news on social media. McPhee shared a hilarious GIF of Ariana Grande at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards showing the singer asking, “And what about it?” She also accompanied her tweet with a diamond ring emoji.

McPhee also posted a screenshot of her text message conversation with Just Jared’s founder Jared Eng on Instagram. She captioned with a heart, a diamond ring and a smiley face emoji and added, “cc: @jaredeng.” Based on the screenshot, Eng texted McPhee, “Well he did a mighty fine job with the ring. So beautiful and classic.” He continued asking, “How did he know your ring size?? And where did he do it?? And did he get down on one knee??”
McPhee only shared a few details of the proposal. “He did it at the top of this mountain in Anacapri [in Capri, Italy],” she texted Eng. “Totally dark only stars. Thankfully he didn’t push me off the cliff. He said it was one or the other. And in the end he spared me. [crying laughing emoji].”
As for Foster, he simply posted an Instagram of the two on their luxurious European vacation (as seen above) and captioned it, “Yup!!”

However you may feel about Foster and McPhee performing together at her first wedding, all that matters is their happiness.
