Jada Pinkett Smith’s Throwback Photos of Whitney Houston Are Everything

With the new Whitney Houston documentary mere days away from release, friends and family of the late singer are already starting to well up with memories and emotion. Among those reminiscing? Jada Pinkett Smith, who took to Instagram to post a series of (epic) throwback photos.

On Tuesday, Smith threw it all the way back to 1998. She was pregnant and, as pregnant women are wont to do, having a party to fete her impending arrival.

“These are the only pics I have of Whitney and I. I’m pregnant with Jaden. She came to my baby shower,” Smith captioned the post, which contains three pics of her with the iconic singer.

And although Smith doesn’t share the subject matter they discussed on that day, she does go on to describe the type of person her late friend really was. “Whitney was so sweet, so fierce… so real,” Smith said, adding, “She was funny and fun and so… present.”

That isn’t the only reason Smith admired and, to this day, remains in awe of Houston.

“As talented and famous as she was… she didn’t wear it on her sleeve. Not many of us in this business can claim that… not even myself at certain points in my life. She was [so] down to earth… that’s what I admired about her most,” Smith said of Houston’s humble nature.

Houston died in 2012 following a prolonged struggle with substance abuse addiction. In Smith’s post, she alludes to the fact that she wishes they’d had more time together, saying, “If only we could have celebrated her more while she was here. You are missed, Whitney.”

The “I Will Always Love You” singer wasn’t the only legendary musician Smith loved and lost, though.

She attended high school with late rapper Tupac Shakur and, while the two never had romantic feelings for each other, they were very close.

Of the friendship, she told Howard Stern in 2015, “we loved deeply.”
