Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith Don’t Like to Say They’re Married

After more than 20 years of marriage, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith no longer refer to each other as husband and wife — but they have a good reason for doing that. Entertainment Tonight reports that both stars have recently stated in separate interviews that their relationship ties go beyond the traditional definitions of marriage because they are both committed to each other for life regardless of how they label their relationship.

In a new interview on Tidal’s Rap Radar podcast, Smith said, “We don’t even say we’re married anymore. We refer to ourselves as life partners, where you get into that space where you realize you are literally with somebody for the rest of your life. There’s no deal breakers. There’s nothing she could do — ever. Nothing that would break our relationship. She has my support ’til death, and it feels so good to get to that space.”

Per Entertainment Tonight, Pinkett Smith expressed the same sentiments on a Sway in the Morning radio interview in June: “Here’s the thing about Will and I — [we] are family. [Divorce] is never going down. It’s just not. Ever. We are family. Take out all that whole marriage/relationship crap, at the end of the day, Will and I are family. I am going to hold him down; doesn’t matter. All that relationship and what people think ideas of a husband, partner and all that, man, whatever. At the end of the day, that is a man that can rely on me for the rest of his life, period.”

Talk about relationship goals. Tabloids have reported on a potential split between this couple at least once a year since they married in 1997. Pinkett Smith told American Airlines’ in-flight magazine in 2015 that every time they come around, she thinks, “Here we go. Get ready. Are ya holdin’ on tight?” It must be exhausting to have to hear these rumors all the time, but it’s also refreshing to see these two are apparently stronger than ever.

Smith released a video in May announcing new music, including a preview of a new song called “To the Clique” — which is an ode to his family. He refers to Pinkett Smith, their two children, Willow and Jayden, and his son Trey from a previous marriage, as “the real-life Incredibles.” It’s clear these two aren’t splitting up anytime soon. So can we put those rumors to rest?
