At this stage in his life, Will Smith has lived to such an extravagant and exciting degree that you’d trust the wisdom of certain life lessons he’s picked up along the way. As reported by Us Weekly, at one point during the interview, Smith opened up about what he believes is the true key to his happiness (and maybe the happiness of others) while discussing his new song, “The Mountaintop.”
“The idea is… I’ve been to the top of money, I’ve had all the sex that I’ve ever wanted, I’ve had all of the adoration,” Smith said. “I’ve been to the top of all those material world mountains and nothing makes you happier other than being useful to others. That’s it. That’s the only thing that ever will satisfy that thing, is that what you’re doing is useful.”
For Smith, gaining this insight into what truly makes him happy and getting to a point where he can embrace this knowledge wholeheartedly has given him a special kind of freedom: “I’m granting myself the freedom to not give a fuck when I don’t give a fuck.”
In another part of the interview, which has already gained notoriety for the actor’s admission that he and wife Jada Pinkett Smithdon’t use the term “married” to describe their relationship, Smith also talked about how he has worked to be positive, spread positivity and push back at negative criticism.
“I always wanted to fight to prove myself,” he said. “Fighting yourself to maintain positivity is the hardest fight you’re ever going have. That struggle to just stay my course, be the person in the world that I wanted to be no matter what people said. I started to call it offensive positivity.”
