What’s even more exciting than when a great book series get rebooted as a movie? When the story gets yet another life onstage as a musical — and that is exactly what is happening with the story of our favorite four girls and their magical denim. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is being adapted into a theatrical production.
The Hollywood Reporter wrote on Wednesday that Blue Spruce Productions has acquired the live theatrical rights from Alcon Entertainment and Alloy Entertainment, the two entities that produced the popular 2005 film, and the two groups together will coproduce the musical.

Blue Spruce Productions is led by Tony award-winning producer Scott Delman, who has also had a hand in creating Broadway smash hits Mean Girls, Kinky Boots and The Book of Mormon.
While the project is officially underway, no one has been announced on the creative team and the production does not yet have a timeline.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was originally a best-selling series five of young-adult novels written by Ann Brashares. The story follows four high school teens who find a pair of perfect jeans that fit all of them even though they have different body shapes and sizes. The girls decide that although they can’t be together all summer, the pants can visit everyone and experience everything.
The movie adaptation of the first book was release in 2005 starring Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, and Amber Tamblyn. The sequel to the successful film was released in 2008 and melded the plots of the second, third and fourth books.
There’s a fifth book in the series, Sisterhood Everlasting, which jumps forward in time to when the girls are 29 years old.

While the musical probably won’t hit theaters for another couple of years, there are also whispers of a third film installment starring the original cast.
Ferrera told People in 2015 that a third film — perhaps based on Sisterhood Everlasting? — was “very much in the works.” She also told E! News, “The sisterhood is still well and alive. I love my girls. We’re very much a part of each other’s lives and if the movie happens it would be a great thing.”
Still, if the third movie never comes to fruition, we’ll still have a new musical and a new soundtrack to go along with the story we love.
