Mariah Carey is considered one of the most gifted singers of her generation, but somehow that didn’t get her into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year. The 55-year-old superstar was honored with her first nomination but somehow she wasn’t a shoo-in when it came time to vote.
Carey discussed the honor with her dry sense of humor on full display in a Los Angeles Times interview on Oct. 30. Journalist Mikael Wood asked if she “had thoughts” on the nomination.
“My thoughts are: I didn’t get in,” she said wryly and then added a little twist to the situation.
“Everybody was calling me going, ‘I think you’re getting in!’ and so I was excited about it. But then it didn’t happen,” Carey admitted. My lawyer [Allen Grubman] got into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame before me.” Carey was first eligible for the honor in 2016, but it took her eight years to even snag a nomination.
Her longtime entertainment lawyer, who also worked with Madonna and Elton John, was inducted in 2022. That has to sting a bit, considering she’s had 19 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart — only The Beatles beat her with 20 top songs. Carey will get another chance at a nomination for 2025, but her exclusion from the music industry isn’t a one-time snub.
On Wednesday, Oct. 16, Carey opened up about her five Grammy Award wins on the Las Culturistas podcast with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers.
Rogers noted, “You don’t have enough of those, by the way.”
“They scammed me. They toy with me,” she responded. Her first two Grammy wins came in 1991 with Best New Artist and Best Pop Female Vocal Performance for “Vision Of Love,” but it would be another 16 years before she nabbed another statuette. From 1991 until 2006, she was “0-for-17,” according to Us Weekly even though she considers her 1997 work of art,Butterfly, as “probably my best album.”
The Queen of Christmas deserves more respect especially since this is her season, and Carey has earned the music industry quite a bit of money.
