Martha Stewart spilled quite a bit of tea in her Netflix documentary, Martha, but not everyone is enjoying the gossip. The 83-year-old lifestyle guru’s ex-husband, Andy Stewart, is steaming mad about what she had to say about their 29-year marriage.
On Oct. 12, he 86-year-old publisher and his third wife, Shyla Nelson Stewart, 56, posted their rebuttal on Shyla’s Facebook page. (You can see the post here.) Their statement was a response to the film’s trailer which was released on Oct. 10. The couple confirmed the strength of their marriage and “happy chapter” of their lives with their adult kids and grandchildren before taking a swipe at the TV personality.
“Prior to this happy chapter of his life, Andy had some dark one, including a painful and abusive marriage to Martha (as in, Martha Stewart), which ended almost 40 years ago,” they wrote on the social media platform. “While Any quietly moved on a forward with his life, it appears that Martha continues to publicly relitigate the marriage.”
One of Andy’s friends told Page Six that he feels like Martha is “stalking” him instead of taking steps to “move on” and “find a man” for herself. Still, this is Martha’s story to tell, and Andy was a part of her rise as the queen of the celebrity lifestyle space. Despite her incredible success, Martha claimed that she was devastated by his ongoing affairs throughout their marriage, including one with her employee.
“He was not satisfied at home,” she said in the documentary. “I don’t know how many different girlfriends he had during this time, but I think there were quite a few.” Martha even offered advice to married women. “Young women, listen to my advice, if you’re married and your husband starts to cheat on you, he’s a piece of s—,” she said with a dramatic. “Get out of that marriage.” Of course, she also had a fling of her own during her stockbroker days which she described as “nothing.” Yet, Martha’s hurt feelings from her marriage to Andy linger.
“He’s the one who wanted the divorce, not I,” Martha pointed out in the film. “He was throwing me away. I was 40 years old. I was gorgeous. You know, I was a desirous woman. But he was treating me like a castaway. He treated me really badly. And in return, I guess I treated him badly.” She told People that she has not spoken to her ex in over 20 years, and it sounds like a reconciliation is not in the cards.
