John Krasinski Isn’t Getting Much of an Opportunity To Enjoy His Sexiest Man Alive Title

John Krasinski was named People‘s Sexiest Man Alive for 2024, but he’s not really getting the chance to enjoy his new title. Fans on social media are chiming in with their thoughts and The Office star is probably feeling the backlash all the way from the internet.

Critics on X don’t seem to like this year’s choice for some reason and are quite vocal about their opinions. “Unintroduce him,” wrote one user. Another added, “John Krasinski was crowned Sexiest Man Alive, and I’m just sitting here wondering… HOW?! #MindBlown.” And another account questioned People‘s choice, “no wayyyyyyyy he’s mid #Pass sorry whoever you are but this cover does nothing for me💀.”

We hope the 45-year-old actor doesn’t read the comments because he was excited to accept the honor. He shared his reaction with the media outlet, “Just immediate blackout. Zero thoughts. Other than maybe I’m being punked. That’s not how I wake up usually, thinking, ‘Is this the day that I’ll be asked to be Sexiest Man Alive?’ And yet it was the day you guys did it. You really raised the bar for me.”

Pedro Pascal, Glen Powell, and Simu Liu were all considered frontrunners for the honor in the pop culture landscape, so fans might be wondering why none of them were chosen this year. It’s a little more complicated than just picking someone and you have to peek behind the Hollywood curtain to find out how the cover story happens in the first place.

A 2012 USA Todayinterview revealed what happened on the magazine’s side the year they chose Channing Tatum. Then-editor Julie Jordan noted that “someone always bubbles to the surface,” but it’s determined by “women in the office,” but they also “pay attention to comments on People.com” and get opinions from “female celebrities.” Still, gossip reporter Elaine “Lainey” Lui pointed out in her Nov. 5 Substack column, The Squawk, that a “willingness is vital here because the Sexiest Man Alive has to be willing to participate – in an interview and a photo shoot. The Sexiest Man Alive must accept PEOPLE’s proposal and play along.”

“But the point is, the Sexiest Man Alive is an active process,” Lui continued. “That is, the magazine isn’t just going to bestow the crown on a person who won’t work for it, at least a little. This is a big issue for them annually, they market the s**t out of it, they’re going to want an exclusive out of their efforts.”

The bottom line is that Sexiest Man Alive is a business move for both People and Krasinski — and he was more than willing to jump into that PR game.
