In royal circles, there is still a fascination about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s exit and what exactly went wrong. Their storied beginning seemed to go south just ahead of their 2018 wedding, but Kate Middleton and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh reportedly shared a united front in their efforts to bring the Duchess of Sussex into the palace fold.

The Daily Mail‘s Rebecca English claimed that both women “repeatedly” reached out to Meghan in her early days in the royal family. Sophie was reportedly Queen Elizabeth II’s go-to person for the Duchess of Sussex because the monarch “valued her wise and steady counsel.” As things became more challenging after the birth of Prince Archie and journalist Tom Bradley exposed the difficulties Meghan was having in 2019, English claimed that Kate and Sophie “continued” to reach out to her.

Harry and Meghan were in South Africa when Bradby, a longtime friend of the Duke of Sussex, spoke to the Duchess of Sussex about being a new mom. “Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging. And then when you have a newborn, you know. And especially as a woman, it’s a lot,” she said while obviously in a very vulnerable state. “So, you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed. It’s um…yeah. I guess, also thank you for asking because not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”

It was a heartbreaking moment because Meghan admitted she was not OK. Kate and Meghan were reportedly “shocked” and hurt by the accusations that no one was helping her, according to English, but both scenarios can be true. Meghan likely felt alone and “rebuffed” them even though Kate and Sophie were at the ready to help her.

Meghan might not have felt comfortable with Kate from the very beginning, though. Ingrid Seward, author of Diana: An Intimate Portrait, told Fox News Digital in April that the “close-knit trio” of Prince William, Kate, and Harry was disrupted by Meghan. From their first meeting, “there [wasn’t] that warm feeling” between Kate and Meghan, and their friendship “started on the wrong foot.” Seward added, “Kate wanted to like Meghan, but it didn’t work out that way.”

The rest is history. Meghan and Harry departed for the U.S. and Kate and Sophie’s friendship blossomed. Meghan never felt like there was an opportunity to fit in no matter how hard the royal family tried.
