Demi Moore Reveals Why Her Role in Ghost ‘Scared the Crap’ Out of Her

Demi Moore starred in Ghost 34 years ago, but fans are still talking about the supernatural romantic film, co-starring the late Patrick Swayze. As the 62-year-old actress vies for award-show season nominations for her work in The Substance, Moore is still being asked about her work over three decades ago.

On the Nov. 28 episode of the Hot Ones podcast, Moore revealed why she almost didn’t take the role of Molly Jensen. “It had so many different genres mixed together that, truly, I thought, ‘This could either be amazing or a f—ing disaster,'” she explained. She decided to “step in,” “take the risk,” and “roll the dice” with film. And boy, did that risk pay off!

Still, the role “scared the crap” out of her because Moore understood “the kind of grief” she was going to have “tap into.” She noted of her big emotional moment, “And I know there’s this kind of iconic thing about [crying out of] one eye — I didn’t plan that. I have no control over that. That’s just how it happened.”

Moore is a big fan of her 1990 film, but she’s reportedly not thrilled that Channing Tatum is interested in making the movie. The Magic Mike star told Vanity Fair in January 2023 that he had “the rights to Ghost” and was interested in playing Swayze’s role as Sam Wheat. “But we’re going to do something different,” he said of the film’s racial stereotypes. “I think it needs to change a little bit.”

Moore was not exactly jumping for joy when she asked about Tatum’s vision in May. “Look, every story in some ways has already been told. The wonderful thing is the different way things can be reinterpreted,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I think there are some films that often are better left not touched and left, and then sometimes there are wonderful surprises in that reinterpretation.”

It’s probably best to leave a masterpiece alone, but Moore may not have a choice in the matter. Tatum’s remake is reportedly “chugging along and picking up steam,” according to . Sometimes Hollywood can’t leave the classics alone.
