Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi exited the U.S. ahead of the election outcome, but their big move might also unexpectedly benefit Prince Harry. The couple has been friends with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex since they moved to Montecito, California in 2020 — and now, they might be able to indirectly help with the royal family feud.
“They helped them get settled in Montecito and introduced them to so many great people, they’re such a huge part of Meghan and Harry’s circle,” an In Touch Weekly insider shared. “The silver lining, at least as far as Harry’s concerned, is that Meghan might actually agree to go over the U.K. to visit them.” The source claimed that Harry is hoping DeGeneres and Rossi’s U.K. presence “might be enough to get [Meghan] to change her mind about never setting foot there again.”
Still, the couple has to think about the British media and their safety if they decide to visit — their trip would have to be strictly off the press’ radar. “It felt like harassment,” Prince Harry said of British tabloids in the ITV documentary Tabloids on Trial, via Entertainment Tonight, in July. “It felt horrible then. It feels horrible now. It’s one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife back to this country.”
It’s the same reason why Tyler Perry recently took The Times to task for their “insatiable” appetite for Meghan news — they started asking him questions about his bestie. “But I will say this: what I learned about mentioning them — because there’s this insatiable appetite to know all about them — is that any question that is asked becomes the headline of anything I say.” When the writer asked why people wanted information on the Sussexes, the filmmaker said curtly, “You’re from the UK, you tell me.”
DeGeneres and de Rossi can’t magically make Harry and Meghan’s concerns about the U.K. go away because the royal family still needs to make strides with the Sussexes. King Charles III should extend an olive branch to his youngest son and assure him that they will be safe and protected if they visit. But will that day ever come? We won’t hold our breath.
The good news is that Harry and Meghan will be a lot closer to the U.K. when they visit their vacation home in Portugal that they bought earlier in the year. It’s a baby step that could start a thaw in the family feud.
