Donald Trump is a divisive political figure on a global scale and that’s why the British government wants to smooth its relationship with him as soon as possible. Their strategy to stay in the president-elect’s good graces is to utilize the royal family to their greatest extent because of Donald Trump’s true affection for them.
To keep the chumminess going, The Telegraph is reporting that Donald Trump will be the first U.S. president to be offered a second state visit. A source revealed, “[Mr. Trump] loves the Royal Family. Look at the fact he’s had his own photo album made of the last visit. Why wouldn’t we want a repeat?” The visit is expected to occur in 2026 since King Charles III’s 2025 calendar is already booked.
A second insider noted that the invitation was extended because of the “unusual circumstances” in his administration. “The fact there has been a change of both sovereign and government in that break [from power] means a second state visit is entirely appropriate,” they added. Even though Charles is the monarch, it appears that Prince William will have a major role in the visit too.
In early December, the Prince of Wales made a “hastily arranged diplomatic mission” to attend the Notre Dame Cathedral reopening because Donald Trump was going to be there, per The Telegraph. The British government realized that there was a lot “at stake” with the president-elect in power, so William is considered their “secret weapon” in keeping him happy.
Donald Trump gushed about his meeting with Prince William in Paris — it’s evident that he’s enamored with the royal family. “He looked really, very handsome last night. Some people look better in person. He looked great. He looked really nice, and I told him that,” he told the New York Postafter the visit. “And I asked him about his wife, and he said she’s doing well. I asked him about his father and his father is fighting very hard, and he loves his father, and he loves his wife, so it was sad.”
The royal family’s move into politics probably wouldn’t please Queen Elizabeth II if she was still around, especially when it comes to Donald Trump. Craig Brown, author of Q: A Voyage Around the Queen, discussed Queen Elizabeth’s disdain toward Donald Trump.
“A few weeks after President Trump’s visit, for instance, she confided in one lunch guest that she found him ‘very rude’: she particularly disliked the way he couldn’t stop looking over her shoulder, as though in search of others more interesting,” Brown wrote. “She also believed President Trump ‘must have some sort of arrangement‘ with his wife Melania, or else why would she have remained married to him?”
Of course, Donald Trump bragged to Fox News in 2019 that he was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth. “There are those that say they have never seen the Queen have a better time, a more animated time,” Donald Trump said.
It’s a complicated relationship, but it sounds like the U.K. government is going to lean hard into the royal family to keep Donald Trump happy.
