The year ahead for Kate Middleton might be taking an interesting turn! The Princess of Wales will be returning to select engagements in 2025 after completing her chemotherapy treatment, but she will also serve in a different capacity due to Prince William‘s changing role.

“Last year was an exceptional year, and William stepped up into a solo global-statesman role but going forward, I think Catherine will spend more time at his side,” Robert Jobson, author of Catherine, the Princess of Wales, told Hello! While their children are their top priority, Jobson believes that “there will be situations where they have to put the country and duty before their children.”

The Telegraphnoted on Jan. 3 that William is expected to be the British government’s “secret weapon” in dealing with President-elect Donald Trump and they are planning a state visit in 2026. A palace insider explained, “[Mr. Trump] loves the Royal Family. Look at the fact he’s had his own photo album made of the last visit. Why wouldn’t we want a repeat?”

While the Prince of Wales will be taking the new leadership role, Kate will be needed by his side for some of the more political visits. She’s waded into this territory before, breaking royal protocols set into place by the late Queen Elizabeth II. With a modernized monarchy though, it’s hard to avoid the political arena.

The couple posted a tweet in support of Ukraine in February 2022. They wrote, “In October 2020, we had the privilege to meet President Zelenskyy and the First Lady to learn of their hope and optimism for Ukraine’s future. Today we stand with the President and all of Ukraine’s people as they bravely fight for that future. W & C.”

Prince William will continue to embrace his global figurehead role while Kate will be stepping up to support him during important events. Otherwise, her focus will continue to be on her family and her recovery. “What we saw last year was her prioritizing her recovery, and there hasn’t been a step-change in that,” a Kate pal told Hello! “There’s no press of a reset button as such.”
