Los Angeles is going through some serious emotions as the recovery from the wildfires begins. The first responders have been incredible with their hard work and dedication in trying to save the community’s homes, and Bruce Willis was there to share his gratitude.
On Thursday, Jan. 16, the 69-year-old actor’s wife, Emma Heming Willis, shared a sweet black-and-white video of her husband thanking Los Angeles police officers. She set the clip to the perfect song, Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California.” Emma captioned the video, “Spotting a first responder, Bruce never missed a chance to show his gratitude with a heartfelt handshake and a ‘thank you for your service.’ Yesterday was no different ❤️🤍💙.” (You can see the video here.)
This was Bruce’s first public sighting since his family publicly revealed his health issues in March 2022. He was first diagnosed with the language disorder, aphasia, which was eventually clarified as frontotemporal dementia. The entire Willis clan, including his two children with Emma, daughters Mabel, 12, and Evelyn, 10, plus ex-wife Demi Moore and their three daughters, Rumer, 36, Scout, 33, and Tallulah, 30, have all rallied around him in the past few years.
Still, the family was criticized for allowing Bruce to work perhaps longer than he should have in Hollywood. A March 2022 Los Angeles Times exposé revealed that many people in the entertainment industry had concerns about the Die Hard star for at least two years before his public diagnosis. Terri Martin, the production supervisor on Bruce’s movie, White Elephant, felt that “it was time for him to retire” because “he just looked so lost, but “he always tried his best.”
Bruce was working at a rapid pace, doing 22 movies in four years that often netted him $2 million for two days of work on certain films. “We are all Bruce Willis fans and the arrangement felt wrong and ultimately a rather sad end to an incredible career,” said director Jesse V. Johnson. “One that none of us felt comfortable with.”
Now, Bruce’s retirement is in full effect and he’s surrounded by his loving family. He may not be walking red carpets any longer, but his gratitude to the first responders of Los Angeles was felt in his sweet smile.
