Cameron Diaz happily moved out of the spotlight in 2014 and didn’t look back until Jamie Foxx lured her out of retirement for Netflix‘s Back In Action. While she seemed thrilled to be working with her Annie co-star again, the paycheck the 52-year-old actress reportedly received might have also been enticing.
Are you ready for this? Diaz reportedly earned a whopping $45 million for two movies for the streaming network, the first being Back In Action, according to Bloomberg. While the paycheck probably helped make her decision easier, it was her husband, Benji Madden who pushed her to pursue her career again after a decade-long absence.
“We were in the house for a long time, which was amazing,” Diaz said of welcoming her two children, daughter Raddix, 4, and son Cardinal, nine months, via surrogate at an Oct. 15 conversation at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit, per E! News. “So, I had to push myself. My husband, he’s just the best,” she added. “He was just like, ‘You’ve been supporting us and building the family.’ And supporting him in his businesses. He’s like, ‘It’s time for us to support you and let mommy ascend and do her do her thing.’”
During her 10-year break, Diaz had amassed quite a fortune already after starring in hit films including There’s Something About Mary, Charlie’s Angels, and The Mask. Diaz invested in real estate with a home in Beverly Hills, a condo in New York City, and an estate in Montecito. She was also successful in the publishing industry, writing The Body Book in 2013 and The Longevity Book in 2016. According to Celebrity Net Worth, her fortune currently stands at $140 million, so it’s safe to say that Diaz’s entertainment return will be on her terms this time around.
“Family is always going to come first for Cameron and that’s something you just have to factor in when you get into business with her,” an insider explained to In Touch Weekly. “And that’s the big difference between who she is now and the way she did things in her 20s and 30s when she would do three or four movies back-to-back without a break. That kind of insane schedule made her rich and steadily resulted in hit movies, but Cameron barely had a personal life during those years and she’s a whole lot more grounded now that she has something to live for beyond her movie career.”
Fans can expect to see Diaz again soon, though. She’s slated to voice Princess Fiona again in Shrek 5 in 2026 and star in a Jonah Hill project, co-starring Keanu Reeves, called Outcome. It’s a great way for her to balance family life and the career she loved so much — Diaz is rewriting her story.
