Now that Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster have officially confirmed their romance, a source behind the scenes is revealing what it was like to work with them during their Broadway revival of The Music Man. That’s where their love reportedly blossomed — despite being married to others — and the talented duo was not very good at hiding their obvious chemistry.
“At intermission, Sutton and Hugh would stand and hug for a minute, two minutes in front of the entire cast coming up the stairs,” alleged a Daily Mail insider, who worked on the show that ran from December 2021 until January 2023. “The cast had to climb four flights of stairs to get to the dressing rooms. And they would stop on Hugh’s floor and just hug in their costumes.” The source described the “long embrace” as “weird” for the cast and crew to witness because “they didn’t even try to hide it.”
The insider chalked it up to a “needy actress” requiring a “hug from the big superman,” but there was obviously something more there — and Foster might have revealed their secret on Live With Kelly and Ryan in July 2022. She divulged her pre-show ritual with Jackman which seemed rather intimate for two co-workers. “We hang out in my dressing room before every show and just catch up. Somehow we ended up sitting … maybe because my dressing room’s a mess, we sit on the carpet,” she said.
“We’ve become really good friends, and we just talk and catch up on our day,” Foster added. “That’s been one of the best parts of the whole thing, that I’ve made this wonderful new friend.” Their private moments together drew them closer, but it might have also impacted their marriages. Jackman was married to Deborra-Lee Furness for 27 years while Foster was married to Ted Griffin for 10 years.
To add insult to injury, the Daily Mail insider pointed out that the two couples would often enjoy “double dates” together. While we don’t know how Griffin has reacted to his estranged wife’s new relationship, Furness was “blindsided” by the revelation. “Deborra-lee was blindsided when she found out about the affair through the run of the show,” a Broadway insider told Us Weekly in November. “It was apparently Broadway’s worst-kept secret, and Deborra-Lee was the last to know.” What made the situation worse was that Jackman allegedly “didn’t own up to [the affair]” which was quite painful for Furness.
While Foster is in the middle of her divorce from Griffin, Jackman and Furness haven’t even filed for divorce despite splitting in September 2023. They did not have a prenuptial agreement after marrying in April 1996 and now their combined fortune of $150 million, per Celebrity Net Worth, is at stake.
