Melania Trump is back in the White House as the First Lady of the United States and her fashion choices are already a hot topic. While her style definitely leans toward couture, her feud with the fashion industry seems to be continuing into Donald Trump’s second administration.
Unlike other first ladies, including Dr. Jill Biden and Michelle Obama, Melania was not warmly embraced by Vogue for a cover story. “I don’t think she would do anything to win over Anna Wintour,” Nancy MacDonell, fashion historian and author of Empresses of Seventh Avenue, told Page Six. Melania often favors European designers because some American brands have refused to dress her, including Marc Jacobs and Zac Posen.
Melania’s stylist Herve Pierre admitted to WWDin November 2024that it’s “no secret” that the “fashion industry is not very welcoming” of Melania. Pierre has been accustomed to shopping off-the-rack for her, paying full price for her clothing. “They say, ‘Oh, she doesn’t dress in American brands.’ But you have to not forget that some American brands are not very welcoming toward her. I respect that,” Pierre added. “But my job is to dress her so I will go wherever I can if I find the right look that is appropriate.”
Americans have four years to see how Melania’s fashion evolves and hopefully avoids the PR mess of June 21, 2018, which happened while visiting migrant children at a shelter in McAllen, Texas. Melania wore a jacket with the message, “I really don’t care, do u?” on the back. It created quite an uproar given the sensitive nature of her visit that day.
“It’s obvious I didn’t wear the jacket for the children, I wore the jacket to go on the plane and off the plane,” Melania told ABC News in October 2018. “It was for the people and for the left-wing media who are criticizing me. I want to show them I don’t care. You could criticize whatever you want to say. But it will not stop me to do what I feel is right.”
Melania didn’t love that the media was “obsessed” with her wardrobe, and she will likely feel the same way this time around. “I often asking myself, if I had not worn that jacket, if I will have so much media coverage,” she added. “I would prefer they would focus on what I do and on my initiatives than what I wear.”
Melania’s fashion conversation continues into Donald Trump’s second administration whether she likes it or not.
