This A-List Singer’s Unexpected Performance at Donald Trump’s Inauguration Festivities May Surprise You

Donald Trump’s Jan. 20 inaugurationbrought out performers like Carrie Underwood, Snoop Dogg, Kid Rock, The Village People, and Nelly, but fans of this A-list singer probably did not expect her name to be on this list. At Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Make America Healthy Again Inaugural Ball, Jewel made a surprise appearance that was not previously announced.

The 50-year-old singer performed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for the controversial for the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services nominee. RFK Jr.’s wife Cheryl Hines was also in attendance at the inaugural event which was described as a “celebration of health” and “unity” to “champion a healthier, brighter future for all,” per Entertainment Weekly.

The “You Were Meant For Me” singer did not publicize her performance on her Instagram account, but she did share that she was recently on a panel “to discuss mental health and the role of AI in wellness” at the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine in Bentonville, Arkansas. Her dedication to the wellness space was likely the reason she was invited by RFK Jr. to perform, but her fans are not pleased by her association with the Donald Trump administration.

“Despite your claims of caring about mental health, I don’t think you realize the harm you’ve caused to the mental wellbeing of thousands upon thousands of your fans. We are beyond shocked, saddened and disappointed. We have lost one of our most valued allies and gay icons today – and that is a truly painful loss,” wrote one fan under her Arkansas post. Another social media follower added, “I have been a fan for decades until today. I have lost all respect for you by performing for Trump. I am heartbroken. Unfollow.”

Jewel has not commented publicly about her Washington, D.C. appearance nor her current political views. She campaigned for Hillary Clinton when she ran for U.S. Senate in 2000, but apparently changed her mind by 2008, describing the Clintons as “the worst of what politics is” in a 2008 Politico article. Politics and entertainment are as divisive as ever and it looks like Jewel is slowly revealing that her views have shifted to her fans. Some will appreciate the apparent move to the right while others are voicing their opposing opinions in her social media comments.
