Thursday, Jan. 23 was Oscar nominations day, and it was a memorable morning for Ariana Grande. She was recognized for her role as Glinda in Wicked in the Best Supporting Actress category, and her boyfriend, Ethan Slater, couldn’t be happier for her.
Slater, who played Boq in the film, shared a rare glimpse of their morning together on his Instagram feed. Grande was dressed pants-less in a long white sweater as she looked out of the window of her New York City apartment. The rainy day didn’t match her mood though — she was festively holding a bouquet of pink balloons after she heard the exciting news. Slater didn’t caption the post, he let the moving image speak for itself.
His Instagram Stories celebrated not only the 31-year-old singer’s success, but he honored the other categories Wicked was nominated for — 10 nods altogether. Grande was equally as emotional on her Instagram page with a carousel of snapshots showing her journey from a young age to playing Glinda.
“picking my head up in between sobs to say thank you so much to @theacademy for this unfathomable recognition. i cannot stop crying, to no one’s surprise,” she wrote in the caption. “i’m humbled and deeply honored to be in such brilliant company and sharing this with tiny ari who sat and studied Judy Garland singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow just before the big, beautiful bubble entered. i’m so proud of you, tiny.”
We have a feeling she also threw in a sweet mention to Slater at the end of her post. “i don’t quite have all my words yet, i’m still trying to breathe. but thank you. oh my goodness, thank you. Universal, Marc, my family, my heart,” she added. “My heart” was likely a reference to her boyfriend, whom she met on the set of the film.
Their romance allegedly started while she was married to Dalton Gomez, and he was married to Dr. Lilly Jay. The couple dispute that timeline, but Jay’s first-person essay titled, “How Does My Divorce Make You Feel?” for The Cut in December gave her version of events.
“One day in London, I looked up and found that they had both arrived,” she wrote about her husband’s growing distance from her while he was filming Wicked. While she doesn’t mention the affair or call out Grande by name, the hints are there in the essay. “I really never thought I would get divorced. Especially not just after giving birth to my first child and especially not in the shadow of my husband’s new relationship with a celebrity,” Jay continued.
It’s a complicated situation, but hopefully, all parties involved will find happiness. And on a day like this, Grande and Slater are celebrating a wicked win.
