Fernanda Torres’ Sweet Story About Karla Sofía Gáscon Shows What the Oscars Nominations Are All About

Just yesterday morning, the 2025 Oscar nominations revealed all the stars and filmmakers up to the movie industry’s biggest prize of the year. But while the nominees are now in a high-stakes competition until the award show on March 2, Best Actress contender Fernanda Torres, who starred in the Brazilian movie I’m Still Here, is showing that it’s not all about fighting your way to the top.

On Instagram, she talked about a sweet moment she shared withEmilia Pérezstar Karla Sofía Gascón, who’s not only also nominated for Best Actress but is making history as the first transgender woman to be nominated in that category.

“When I arrived in Los Angeles to start the final phase of the film’s campaign, I was invited to a W Magazine party,” Torres, who won the Best Actress – Drama Award at the 2025 Golden Globes, set the scene. The party, which took place on Jan. 4, honored all the cover stars from the outlet’s Performances Issue. Alongside Torres, honorees included Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Paul Mescal, Colman Domingo, and many more.

According to Torres, the party had “the highest concentration of amazing actors I had seen in my life.” As she shyly made her way through the A-listers like a “fish out of water,” Gascón swooped in and took her under her wing.

“This woman takes me by the hand and introduces me to everyone,” she remembered. “She was so kind to me, she showed so much solidarity.”

Torres then explained why she chose to share the story. “I say this because I know sometimes people in the heat of the moment create this rivalry of one against the other, but I swear that this year the choices the Oscars made in the Best Actress are so special,” Torres said. “Each one in their own way. Everyone deserves it. Everyone won. Let’s not treat anyone poorly.”

As a reminder, Emilia Peréz, who topped yesterday’s nomination with 13 Oscar nominations, has been the target of critiques from fans since its release. Among the complaints are the lack of Mexican talent and authenticity to the story, Selena Gomez’s lacking language skills, and the hurtful depiction of transgender identity onscreen.

But while those critiques may be valid, Torres wanted to ask her Brazilian fans – who tend to get over-excited on the internet – to calm down. “I am forever grateful to Karla Sofía Gascón, she’s wonderful in Emilia Peréz,” Torres added.

In the category, Torres and Gáscon will be competing with other major powerhouses: Demi Moore for her performance in The Substance, Cynthia Erivo for Wicked and Mikey Madison for Anora.

So, at the end of her video, Torres shared some love with them too. “Demi Moore sent me a personal message before the Golden Globes,” she said of the Best Actress – Comedy or Musical Golden Globe winner, adding that she’s “a woman with so much kindness.”

“Cynthia Erivo, my God, a goddess,” she continued. “Mikey Madison, who hasn’t seen Anora here has to see it. She’s amazing in it.”

“Everyone there deserves it, but also deserve our kindness,” Torres ended. “Let’s not feed into hate, you know?”

In the comments, followers of Torres are applauding her attitude. “Art will never be about being one against the other! 😍” wrote one commenter. “Art is a universe in which stars co-exist and shine all at the same time,” wrote another fan beautifully. “Beautiful statement. Queen behavior.”

And that is what the Oscar nod seems to mean to her; it’s all about being recognized for your work while applauding the others too. After all, when it comes to the Oscars, it truly is just an honor to be nominated.
