Kanye West and Bianca Censori’s head-turning Grammys red carpet appearance has everyone talking for a number of reasons which, let’s face it, was presumably the goal. However, a less-talked-about detail is related to one of West’s previous red carpet appearances with then-wife Kim Kardashian.
Throughout his career, West’s modus operandi has been to illicit strong reactions whether that’s in response to interrupting award show speeches, offensive social media posts, onstage rants or through his wife’s outfits. The 2025 Grammys was no different.
The couple, who married in January 2023, made a surprise appearance on the red carpet on Feb. 3 with Censori in a completely see-through mini dress that showed off, well, everything. West, meanwhile, stood beside her fully clothed in a display that felt uncomfortable and, for many on social media, hard to make sense of.
But one thing is for sure, West seems to have drastically changed his tune in the years since a much-talked-about argument with ex-wife Kim Kardashian that aired on Keeping Up With The Kardashians back in 2019.
In a scene filmed the night before the 2019 Met Gala, West declared his wife’s figure-hugging Thierry Mugler wet dress “too sexy” to wear.
“I went through this transition where being a rapper, looking at all these girls and looking at my wife, like, ‘Oh my girl needs to be just like the other girls showing their body off,'” he told Kardashian. “I didn’t realize that that was affecting my soul and my spirit as someone who is married and the father of now… about to be four kids. A corset is a form of underwear, it’s hot, for who though?”
In response, Kardashian stood her ground, telling her husband, “So the night before the Met you’re going to come in here and say that you’re not into a corset vibe?”
“You’re giving me really bad anxiety. You knew last night I had really bad anxiety and I don’t need any more negative energy and for you say you’re now not into me wearing a tight dress,” she said.
“You are my wife and it affects me when pictures are too sexy,” West replied. The argument was an early glimpse into the growing ideological divide between the couple who announced their split in 2021 after West’s controversial, and conservative, presidential election campaign in 2020.
After the scene aired, Kardashian received praise from fans who commended her for sticking up for herself against her husband’s controlling behavior. “You built me up to be this sexy person and confidence and all this, and just because you’re on a journey and transformation doesn’t mean I’m in the same spot with you,” the mom-of-four told him before he stormed out.
It seems West came around to the idea of the world seeing his wife in a revealing outfit. He did walk with Kardashian on the Met Gala red carpet that year and, as we saw on Sunday night, certainly appears to be on board with Censori’s exposing looks. However, the moment understandably ellicited a skepticism about West’s treatment of his partners and his apparent desire to control how they dress and we may be right to be cautious in how we view his current relationship knowing what we know about his first marriage.
