While Kim Kardashian’s reunion with ex-boyfriend Pete Davidson was reportedly friendly at SNL‘s 50-anniversary celebration, there’s another former Hollywood couple who may have tried to avoid each other at all costs. Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds, who were married from 2008-2011, almost crossed paths on the red carpet on Sunday night.
Reynolds, who surprised everyone with his first red-carpet appearance with wife Blake Lively amid their Justin Baldoni legal scandal, arrived at the festivities just moments before Johansson, according to Hello! The Black Widow star was supporting her husband, Colin Jost, who is the head writer and cast member of SNL. Johansson is also a member of The Five-Timers Club for celebrities who have hosted the show more than five times.
Johansson was featured in the opening sketch with Kardashian, Kristen Wiig, Fred Armisen, Ana Gasteyer, and Will Ferrell which spoofed The Lawrence Welk Show. Reynolds made a cameo from the audience later in the show with Lively sitting next to him.
“Ryan Reynolds! How’s it going?” Tina Fey asked him from the Studio 8H stage.
“Great! Why, what have you heard?” he responded, pretending to look nervous at the veiled reference to the couple’s Baldoni feud. The timing might have felt off for that joke, but the bigger deal might have been his return to SNL in the first place. The Deadpool star has only hosted the show once on Oct. 3, 2009. Since then, he’s reportedly “steered clear of hosting SNL” because it is Jost’s territory.
“It’s no secret in Hollywood that Colin wields an enormous amount of influence behind the scenes of that show, beyond just being a high-powered writer, senior cast member, and Update co-anchor. Colin is angling to eventually run the whole thing when that opportunity presents itself,” an In Touch Weekly source claimed in May 2024. Plus, Johansson is “a regular presence” at the show and the afterparties, so Reynolds “has basically surrendered to them as a power couple” when it comes to SNL.
Reynolds and Johansson began dating in 2007 after he split from former fiancée Alanis Morissette. By May 2008, the couple was engaged, and they walked down the aisle that same year on Sept. 27. While they craved their privacy, it came as a shock to fans when they announced their divorce in December 2010.
“After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we’ve decided to end our marriage,” they said in a statement to People. “We entered our relationship with love, and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.” There have been rumors that Reynolds’ relationship with Lively overlapped with his Johansson marriage since they were working on Green Lantern, but they have denied those allegations.
Still, there seem to be some unresolved feelings between Reynolds and Johansson, so it was probably best that the SNL red carpet run-in was avoided at all costs.
