Cynthia Erivo was honored at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards on Feb. 27, but she wasn’t there alone. Even though she walked the red carpet solo, her girlfriend Lena Waithe was there to support her.
The Wicked star went in full glam, wearing one of Maison Margiela Artisanal’s theatrical designs. With a full, black skirt and a cape draping her shoulders, the 38-year-old triple threat looked every inch like the major Hollywood star that she is while setting her sights on the Oscars on Sunday.
Waithe also posed along on the red carpet, giving her partner the full spotlight on her big night. She looked sharp in an elegantly tailored blue suit that showed off the impeccable styling of her outfit. It’s likely that Waithe will also be by Erivo’s side on Sunday, March 2 to celebrate her Best Actress nomination.
The dynamic duo first met in 2018 at the Met Gala, but Waithe was strictly off limits because she was engaged to film executive Alana Mayo at the time. They went on to marry and divorce between 2018 and 2020, and that’s when the rumors about Waithe and Erivo started to rumble. Was the an overlap? That relationship gossip has never been addressed, and the women have continued to support each other as their romance blossomed. Since they have been dating each other though, Erivo’s confidence and success have only soared.
It’s something that the talented actress pointed out at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards. “If you happen to be sat listening to a 30-something-year-old, proud alt-Black girl with a gap in her smile, a wide nose, and high cheekbones, then you happen to be listening to a woman whose dreams materialized in real-time before your very eyes,” she told the captive audience, per Variety.
“I got to fly and now the skies are waiting for you too … I hope and pray that those dreams you keep tucked away rise to the surface,” Erivo continued. “I hope those dreams you dare to dream, really do come true.” With Waithe by her side, Erivo appears invincible, but don’t expect either of them to put their relationship on blast — they want to stay privately off the radar.
