TV is all about the reboots and revivals right now, and we’re loving it. Shows like Murphy Brown, Twin Peaks, Full House, and Charmed were natural candidates for getting a second life on television because they all had characters viewers related to.
The underestimated middle child Darlene (Sara Gilbert) from Roseanne was a fan favorite, and now she headlines The Connors. Who could resist the wily charms of Karen (Megan Mullally) on Will & Grace? Some characters were just oddly fascinating, like Twin Peaks‘ the Log Lady (Catherine E. Coulson). Love them or love to hate them, these characters felt like friends, and who wouldn’t want to check in on them a couple of decades later?
As we look ahead 20 years from now, it’s difficult to know which of our current TV shows will be getting a reboot. But here’s our best guess on who we’ll be spending small-screen time with once again, whether it be streaming, cable or some newfangled way to watch in the future.
1. Game of Thrones
Yes, HBO has a prequel in development, but everyone young and old from various cultural backgrounds and tax brackets simply loves this show. Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) are characters we hold near and dear to our hearts. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a reboot in 2038 so a whole different generation gets the opportunity to meet a new Mother of Dragons.
2. Modern Family
Using a mockumentary style, this fast-paced, quick-witted show features an extended family who love each other deeply but often has trouble showing it. If that family dynamic sounds familiar, you’re not alone. It’s that exact aspect of the show that makes it so relatable. In 20 years, Lily Tucker-Pritchett (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) will be 31 and can take over Claire Dunphy’s (Julie Bowen) role as matriarch.

3. Grey’s Anatomy
We love this show for its perfect mix of medical drama and soap opera-style romance that’s provided many laughs and even more tears over the last 15 seasons. Grey Sloane Memorial Hospital is likely to still be saving lives 20 years from now, and it’s intoxicating to think who the next McDreamy or McSteamy will be or who the next female doctor BFFs will be. Despite the numerous medical breakthroughs we’re likely to see in the years ahead, there will always be gut-wrenching physical and emotional trauma, so we hope this show will have a comeback.
4. The Crown
Twenty years from now, Prince Charles will likely be king, and it’s even possible Prince George will have a child of his own. Given the endless fascination with the British royal family, we’d like to see a new version of The Crown that focuses on Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (who you may know better as Kate Middleton) as the kingdom navigates its way through Brexit. Either way, we’ll keep calm and carry on watching.
5. The Big Bang Theory
The Big Bang Theory reboot could focus on the next generation of geek culture and likely look a lot different from the original show given that scientists will likely know much more about the universe as we near the year 2040. We’re even going to suggest the reboot take place on Mars and have the scientist characters be part of the Mars terraforming lab. This wouldn’t be the first TV show set in space, but it might just be the first sitcom set on Mars.
6. The Walking Dead
For decades, the zombie has been seen in American culture as a metaphor for some of our greatest fears, especially when the people in charge seem to be brain dead. The Walking Dead has been a hugely successful show despite the fact that many of its lead characters have been killed off. We’re not sure exactly what the zombie will represent if the show gets rebooted in two decades, but possibilities include severe climate change, widespread infertility or the takeover of raging dictators.
7. House of Cards
Politics will always be a dirty business, so it’s likely this show will see a reboot a couple of decades from now. Thanks to clever writers, the show’s popularity hasn’t waned despite losing star Kevin Spacey. This show is just like a good politician: tough, passionate and resilient. If actors like Daniel Radcliffe and Shailene Woodley, both of whom are in their 20s now, reinvented the roles of Francis and Claire Underwood, we’d totally watch it.
8. The Office
Saturday Night Live recently poked fun at host and star of The Office Steve Carell by making fun of his refusal to reboot the hit show The Office. They even created a mini Office reunion. But the show doesn’t need Carrell to move forward. We’re assuming people will still be working in dull, gray cubicles in boring office environments 20 years from now, so it’s likely there will be new demand for the show that brought NBC huge success and numerous Emmys.

9. Sex and the City
Forget the Sex and the City movies and whether or not Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall dislike each other. Forget about The Carrie Diaries, the show that imagined Carrie Bradshaw’s life as a high schooler. Instead, think about what life will be like for single women navigating the business and dating world in 2038. We are so intrigued, especially since that will be the same time some of our daughters will be looking for work and love.
