Despite Cold, Kelly Clarkson Sang Live at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

In spite of the record-breaking cold at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City on Thursday, some performers opted against lip-synching and instead braved the cold to sing live. Among them was powerhouse Kelly Clarkson, because of course this legend performed in severe winter temperatures with her full band.

According to E! News, although it was under 20 degrees F in the Big Apple on Thanksgiving, Clarkson went full throttle on performing her hit song “Heat.” She was able to perform live likely because she was on a stage rather than a moving float; the latter doesn’t have enough support for the necessary equipment to do a live performance.

The official Macy’s Twitter shared a brief video of Clarkson’s performance, writing, “@kelly_clarkson, you never disappoint.”

Meanwhile, Clarkson shared a slideshow of photos from the performance on Instagram.

E! reports that the Voice judge also used her Instagram to reassure fans that she was truly singing in an Instagram Live video: “Umm, I don’t know if y’all know this, but that was live! Brynn Cartelli [who was part of Team Kelly on Clarkson’s first season of The Voice], thank you—singing in this cold weather with me. It’s so cold in New York,” she said, giving her former Voice mentee a shout-out. “I just wanted y’all to know, you probably all thought that sounded so good from Brynn Cartelli, but that was live, as well. So Brynn Cartelli’s just rocking those runs this morning. I didn’t even give those runs this morning. I was like, nope! Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving, y’all! I’m so excited to be here with Brynn!”

In addition, Clarkson tweeted about the cold, writing, “So my toes finally have feeling back in them,” along with a crying-with-laughter emoji. Clarkson continued, “That was a very cold Thanksgiving moment! I’ve been beggin’ the Lord for winter, and well, he answered. #MacysDayParade thanks for having us! So thankful and appreciative for all the blessings in my life! Y’all have a good one!”

It also wasn’t just fans who noticed the irony of Clarkson performing “Heat” in such extreme cold according to another tweet.
