Jennifer Aniston is headed back to TV alongside fellow fan favorite Reese Witherspoon — and Aniston is finally talking about how excited she is to dive into this project. During a press junket for her new Netflix project, Dumplin’, Aniston spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the Apple series, saying, “I just keep pinching myself, from this to that I just don’t know what to say. We started shooting a month ago and it has been so much fun. It is hard, it is dense, but it is so fulfilling.”

The remarks made by Aniston about the show being difficult and “dense” are more in line with recent reports, which peg the series as a drama. Per TVLine, the show will provide “an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the women (and men) who carry out this daily televised ritual.”
Aniston’s comments are particularly interesting in light of the fact that the show has apparently shifted direction since it was originally announced. The series, which received a two-season, 20-episode order last November, was first conceived as a comedy.

Based on a concept developed by former HBO exec Michael Ellenberg, the series will incorporate information from the book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV by CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter (who will also serve as a consultant on the show). In addition to starring, Aniston and Witherspoon will co-executive produce. According to The Wrap, Emmy award-winning director Mimi Leder (ER, Shameless) will direct at least one episode.
In addition to Aniston and Witherspoon, Steve Carell has been cast as the male lead, a character named Mitch Kessler, who is a morning show anchor struggling with his relevancy in the ever-changing media landscape.

The Apple drama will be Aniston’s first TV gig since Friends went off the air in 2004. Likewise, it’s Carell’s first series since The Office ended in 2011. Meanwhile, Witherspoon has been eking out a comfortable spot in the contemporary TV landscape with the acclaimed HBO series Big Little Lies being her most recent credit.
