Kelly Clarkson probably wishes she could turn back time and relive this moment over and over again. During Dec. 2’s 2018 Kennedy Center Honors ceremony, Clarkson met honoree Cher for the very first time and she, of course, couldn’t contain her excitement.
The Voice judge shared a photo with the Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again actor on Twitter and gushed, “I met Cher!!! My life is better than everyone else’s today!” True, Kelly. True.
Entertainment Tonight also captured their meeting on video and Clarkson’s reaction is absolutely adorable — and totally relatable. You can watch their interaction here.
“Hi! I’m Kelly Clarkson! Nice to meet you!” the “Heat” singer said upon seeing the musical icon. “I have never met you, I’ve been talking about you this whole time going, ‘She’s right behind me!!'” Clarkson continued gushing to Cher, “I’m a big fan, obviously everyone here is, I’m gonna stop talking.”

In the background Cher is heard saying, “Oh, my God, how are you?” According to ET, the legend also told Clarkson, “I’m so happy to meet you!”

The American Idol winner reacted pretty much how most everyone would in meeting Cher in person. She’s a huge star who has impacted both the entertainment industry and fans’ lives in huge ways. Based on Clarkson’s reaction, Cher has also influenced her life.
Clarkson attended the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington D.C not just simply in hopes of meeting Cher, but to honor her fellow colleague, friend and mother-in-law, Reba McEntire. When speaking with Cher, ET reports Clarkson said, “I’m so proud of y’all tonight. I’m here singing for Reba, but I was so jealous! I was like, ‘Can I sing for Cher too?'”

According to USA Today, Clarkson also gave a heartfelt speech for McEntire during the ceremony. “Reba knows I’m not excited about this — I hate giving speeches, but I love her so much that I’m gonna do it.” She added, “If we’re all being honest, sometimes when we meet our heroes it doesn’t always pan out how you hope, but meeting Reba, being friends with her and eventually becoming family has been one of the highlights of my life — truly.”

She even called McEntire a “really rad grandma,” per USA Today, before singing the country star’s hit song, “Fancy.”
In addition to Cher and McEntire, Hamilton co-creators Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail and Andy Blankenbuehler, music director Alex Lacamoire, saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter and composer Philip Glass were all also honored.
The Kennedy Center Honors will air on Dec. 26 at 8/7c on CBS, so make sure you set your DVR so you don’t miss Clarkson’s touching speech and performance.
