Ellen Pompeo Hasn’t Spoken to Patrick Dempsey Since He Left Grey’s Anatomy

Ellen Pompeo got real about her current relationship with Patrick Dempsey during a recent appearance on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Facebook Watch series Red Table Talk. Considering the actors used to play a very solid leading couple on Grey’s Anatomy, it might surprise you to learn that Pompeo revealed they don’t stay in touch. As contentious as that sounds, Grey’s fans can rest easy knowing the two may not be on daily speaking terms, but Pompeo thinks the world of her former costar.

While appearing on Red Table Talk (Pompeo’s episode was posted on Monday), Pompeo opened up about Dempsey, the man who once played her love interest Derek Shepherd on the longtime ABC drama. As Grey’s viewers know, Derek and Meredith (Pompeo) were a couple many rooted for since the very beginning of the series. However, Derek was killed off in 2015 during season 11.

Since his exit, he and Pompeo apparently haven’t spoken. Pompeo revealed: “We haven’t spoken since he’s left the show. I have no hard feelings toward him. He’s a wonderful actor, and we made the best TV you can make together.”

Her kind words for the actor didn’t stop there. She added, “That’s a talented man right there. He did 11 amazing years. Typically, when people leave the show, they need to sort of find themselves, who they are without the show, because the show takes up so much of your life. You need that time to figure out who you are without the show, so we have not spoken, but I will always have a place in my heart for Patrick.”

Dempsey feels exactly the same way about Pompeo. In October, he told Entertainment Tonight about her and his other former costars. “That was a very special bond that just — there was a magic to our connection and that’s special.”

He continued, “I think it started with the original cast and the length that it has and the new people that have come in, and it’s amazing, and it’s continuing to affect so many people and to really be a strong part of so many people’s lives. You’re a part of television history. It’s really remarkable.”

Pompeo previously opened up about Dempsey’s exit in an extremely honest conversation with The Hollywood Reporter last January in which she didn’t hold back about her salary and worth as a female TV star.

“For me, Patrick leaving the show was a defining moment, deal-wise,” she admitted. “They could always use him as leverage against me — ‘We don’t need you; we have Patrick’ — which they did for years. I don’t know if they also did that to him, because he and I never discussed our deals. There were many times where I reached out about joining together to negotiate, but he was never interested in that.”

Even though Pompeo and Dempsey may not have spoken in three years, it sounds like she has no hard feelings toward him whatsoever, which is always a plus in our book.
