Bethenny Frankel Hospitalized After Near-Fatal Allergic Reaction

Real Housewives of New York star Bethenny Frankel is sharing about a terrifying experience. On Monday, she took to Twitter to reveal that she’d been admitted to the hospital over the weekend after suffering a reaction from a rare fish allergy.

It all started on Sunday when Frankel sat down to enjoy a  meal. “Sun, I had soup, itched & was unconscious for 15 mins then to ER & ICU for 2 days w BP of 60/40,” she tweeted. “I couldn’t talk, see thought I had a stroke & dying & told if 5 mins later I’d be dead.”

In fact, Frankel insists she likely would be had it not been for two things. “911 & EPI saved me,” she wrote, adding, “I’ll never not carry an #epipen.”

This isn’t the first time Frankel has dealt with her allergy presenting itself unexpectedly. During an episode of The Real Housewives of New York in July, she suffered a severe reaction after eating with her fellow castmates on vacation in Colombia.

In the wake of her latest scare, Frankel — who founded the charity initiative B Strong — has decided to take action. She told a fan who commented on her tweet that she is making changes in her life.

But Frankel has her eye on more altruistic adjustment too. When one fan pointed out that the $300 to $600 price tag of lifesaving EpiPens has become prohibitive for many people who need it, Frankel tweeted, “I am all over this. I’ve heard about it and this will be a mission of mine.”

While she puts that project into motion, Frankel also intends to solve another pressing need faced by patients at Newton Wellesley, where she was treated.

“Of course my next project is to get them new mattresses from @Casper bc they have no budget for TVs or comfortable beds 🙁 for really sick people,” she wrote. She later asked fans to share any mattress contacts they may have as she branches out her search with the right brand for the charitable act.

And, as it turns out, she is already making good on her promises. Replying to fans inquiring about the mattresses, Frankel said, “All good @Wayfair came to the rescue.”

(Leesa mattress company also offered to contribute mattresses for the cause.)

Her fans likely aren’t surprised Frankel is making such fast moves to help those in need. In addition to B Strong (and often through it), she frequently pitches in to provide assistance to others during times of crisis.

When Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, Texas, last August, Frankel quickly mobilized to provide much-needed relief to those affected by the natural disaster. She did the same following a deadly earthquake in Mexico in October, and after seeing the complete devastation in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria last fall — the latter of which she raised over $1 million toward.

Although Frankel’s new mission was spurred by what we can only imagine to be a deeply scary experience for her, it’s inspiring to see a celebrity turn an obvious negative into a positive for so many other people.
