Since she was cast in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, Emma Watson has taken it upon herself to get everyone hyped up for the upcoming film. In addition to sharing a cast photo on Instagram earlier this week, she also gave us our first look at Laura Dern in Little Women, playing Marmee March, the family matriarch.
On Wednesday, Watson posted a black-and-white set photo of herself and Dern seated in what looks like a bedroom with Gerwig making a big gesture with her hands. Watson’s caption is simple: a film camera emoji and a heart paired with a tag for the Little Women Twitter account. While it’s not clear what’s happening in the scene that’s being shown, if we know anything about LittleWomen, we know that Marmee loves to have a good heart-to-heart with each of her daughters. Could this be a moment when she’s giving her oldest daughter some much-needed life advice?
According to her previous Instagram photo, Watson is slated to play Meg March, the oldest of the four March sisters. Saoirse Ronan is set to play Jo, the second eldest, and Florence Pugh and Eliza Scanlen are set to play Amy and Beth, the youngest and second youngest, respectively. Timothée Chalamet will play Laurie, whose close friendship with the March sisters takes some unexpected turns in the original book.

In addition to Dern, Watson, Ronan, Pugh, Scanlen and Chalamet, Meryl Streep is also set to costar in Gerwig’s Little Women as Marmee’s wealthy sister Josephine. Although we haven’t seen any glimpses of Streep in her Little Women period garb just yet, we have seen the March sisters bundled up on a snowy set thanks to a paparazzi photo that was released in November.
With Watson’s photo of Dern adding to the small but seriously exciting pile of images we’ve seen from this production, we’re even more amped up to see how this new adaptation (the eighth of its kind) of Alcott’s iconic novel holds up to previous iterations, like the 1994 version starring Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes and Christian Bale.
Little Women hits theaters in December 2019.
