Jada Pinkett Smith & Will Smith Don’t Celebrate Wedding Anniversaries for This Reason

In her Facebook series, Red Table Talk, Jada Pinkett Smith frequently opens up about deeply personal topics, including her relationship with Will Smith. As of New Year’s Eve, the couple has been married for 21 years. However, they didn’t do anything particularly special to mark the occasion for a really good reason. Pinkett Smith explained that she and Smith don’t celebrate wedding anniversaries because their marriage isn’t dependent on just one day in their lives.

“It’s more of a life partnership, so it’s not steeped in that day,” Pinkett Smith told her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, and her daughter, Willow Smith, on the most recent episode of Red Table Talk. She continued, “We don’t really celebrate that day anymore in the sense because the context of our union is totally different.”

In fact, they’re often in different places on their wedding anniversary, which is on New Year’s Eve, because her husband has a different approach to the holiday than Pinkett Smith does. She explained, “Usually, Will on New Year’s likes to be in an adventure in the world somewhere. There’s no telling where he’s going to be. And I like to be inside. I don’t want to be out in the world. He now has the freedom to go and have an awesome adventure of some kind.”

This isn’t the first time Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have opened up about how their relationship defies the traditional ideas of marriage. In November, she admitted in another episode of Red Table Talk that she doesn’t think she’s mature enough for divorce; however, in October, when Smith appeared as a guest star, he told their daughter they once went through an especially low point in their marriage.

“I was devastated even worse than a divorce,” he explained. “We broke up within our marriage and got back together again. We had to rebuild with new rules and something way, completely different.”

In June, both Smith and Pinkett Smith said in separate interviews that they view their marriage as a life partnership. Smith told Tidal’s Rap Radar podcast, “We don’t even say we’re married anymore. We refer to ourselves as life partners, where you get into that space where you realize you are literally with somebody for the rest of your life. There’s no deal breakers. There’s nothing she could do — ever. Nothing that would break our relationship. She has my support ’til death, and it feels so good to get to that space.”

At the time, Pinkett Smith said in a Sway in the Morning radio interview, “Take out all that whole marriage/relationship crap, at the end of the day, Will and I are family. I am going to hold him down; doesn’t matter.” She said, “At the end of the day, that is a man that can rely on me for the rest of his life, period.”

While it may seem unorthodox or even strange for a couple to forgo celebrating their wedding anniversary, these two seem to have figured out exactly how to support each other and support their family, which is ultimately all that matters.
