It may be a new year, but some things never change. Unfortunately, that includes body-shaming trolls, though the celebrities they target aren’t having any of it. On Thursday, it appeared that Madonna was responding to body-shamers on Instagram, after several days of internet speculation about whether or not she’d gotten butt implants in 2018. Though she doesn’t directly address the rumors in her post, she does make an empowered statement about how little she cares what other people think about her life and her decisions, especially when it comes to what she does with her own body.
Madonna shared a photo of herself wearing a glittery “NYE” headband that matches the one she wore in a viral video from her surprise New Year’s Eve performance at New York City’s historic Stonewall Inn. She captioned the picture, “Desperately Seeking No Ones Approval……………….” with a crying-laughing emoji. She added, “And Entitled to Free Agency Over My Body Like Everyone Else!! Thank you 2019! Its Going to Be an amazing Year!!” She used party and fire emojis and included the hashtags #2019, #freedom, #respect, #nofear and #nodiscrimination.
According to Us Weekly, several fans responded to Madonna’s comments with their own thoughts on the matter; Us highlighted the fact that fans were supportive regardless of whether or not Madonna had the surgery. As of Friday, comments had been turned off on the post, potentially to avoid more negativity coming the singer’s way.

As Us Weekly noted, this isn’t the first time that Madonna has faced plastic surgery speculation. Throughout the course of her career, she’s been targeted by trolls for any change in her appearance. And if we can count on anyone to offer up empowering words of wisdom in the face of scrutiny, it’s the Queen of Pop herself. Whether or not she chose to change her body surgically, it’s no one’s business but Madonna’s.
