The 2019 Golden Globes began with a devilishly light and funny opening monologue that ended on an emotional note, making it one of the big highlights of the evening right out of the gate. Although cohosts Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh spent most of the opening moments “insulting” various celebs (such as Spike Lee, Gina Rodriguez and Jim Carrey) with praise made to sound like negativity, Oh’s comments recognizing the level of diversity that is (finally) changing Hollywood really resonated with us.
Even though Samberg and Oh’s “kill ’em with kindness” opener jokes got the mood lifted, it was really Oh’s time to shine as the opening monologue wound down and Samberg stepped aside to give her the space to address the room honestly and from the heart.
“I said yes to the fear of being on this stage tonight because I wanted to be here to look out into this audience and witness this moment of change,” Oh began, continuing, “I’m not fooling myself; next year could be different. It probably will be. But right now, this moment is real. Trust me, it is real. Because I see you. And I see you. All of these faces of change. And now, so will everyone else.”

Oh’s acknowledgment of the diverse actors who were in attendance and nominated this year — including Billy Porter, Regina King, Oh herself and the casts of Crazy Rich Asians and BlackPanther — is truly a landmark moment. And it matters that these films, TV shows and actors are present and receiving accolades not because they are filling some quota, but because their work is as award-worthy as — if not more so than — the rest. People of color, LGBTQ folks, immigrants and more are changing how we look at the world through their work, and that absolutely deserves acknowledgment.
Folks on Twitter didn’t fail to notice, either. Commenters immediately applauded Oh’s remarks.

Sandra Oh, turning a lame #goldenglobes monologue into something special:"I wanted to be here to look out into this audience and witness this moment of change…right now, this moment is real….Because I see you. all of these faces of change. and now so will everyone else."

Basically, Oh’s kindness and wokeness got the 2019 Golden Globes started in the best way possible, and for that, we just fell in love with her a little bit more.
