Melissa McCarthy Snuck in Sandwiches at the Golden Globes & Handed Them Out

If you’ve ever attended a fancy event where snacks were not provided, you may be able to relate to the hunger of some celebrities who attend the annual Golden Globe Awards. During the 2019 broadcast on Sunday, an unlikely hero came to the rescue. Melissa McCarthy snuck in ham and cheese sandwiches and handed them out at this year’s Golden Globes, earning her respect and thanks from fellow stars, including a shoutout in one winner’s speech.

“I’ve been handing them out to everyone,” McCarthy told Variety during the event. “Next year, I’m bringing hot dogs.”

During her acceptance speech for best actress in a musical or comedy motion picture, The Favourite star Olivia Colman gave McCarthy a special shoutout for the thoughtfulness, though she didn’t use her name. After promising she wouldn’t cry so her table wouldn’t make fun of her, Colman began her speech, “Hi. Thank you for the sandwiches. Amazing.”

How McCarthy got so many sandwiches into the event was a mystery to some stars, like Jessica Chastain. Speaking to Variety, Chastain asked, “How did she get them in here?” Despite the question, she still reflected on the necessity of such an act: “But it’s a good idea because by the time you get into the ballroom dinner has already been served, and you’re always so hungry.”

According to Variety, dinner at the Golden Globes is usually served before the telecasted event so as to avoid the sounds of clinking silverware during the ceremony. That means several stars are trapped on the red carpet outside, unable to eat ahead of the hours-long award night. Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s Rachel Brosnahan, who took home an award for best actress in a musical or comedy TV series last night, told Variety before her win that she was devastated because she had forgotten to pack her go-to protein bar snacks for the show.

Variety reports that the sandwiches McCarthy handed out were wrapped in plastic and appeared to come from Joan’s on Third, a specialty food marketplace in Los Angeles.
