Michael Douglas Couldn’t Help but Gush About Catherine Zeta-Jones at the Golden Globes

Two decades of marriage is nothing to balk at, especially for celebrity couples who are scrutinized constantly. On Sunday, after he accepted the award for best actor in a TV comedy or musical for The Kominsky MethodMichael Douglas couldn’t help but gush to reporters at the Golden Globes about his wife of 18 years, Catherine Zeta-Jones.

“We celebrated our 18th anniversary recently, and besides the genuine love that only continues to grow, I think the fact that we’re in the same industry really helps us to understand what is going on,” Douglas said in the press room after his win. He took a moment to plug Zeta-Jones’ Facebook Watch series Queen America. Then he continued, “It was great for her to be here tonight and to share one of those nice things where your partner totally understands what’s going on. I flashed back to the time when she was pregnant with our daughter in Chicago and all the awards shows that were going on then.”

Douglas and Zeta-Jones have two children together: Dylan Douglas, 18, and Carys Douglas, 15. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Douglas admitted, “The joy of my marriage with Catherine and having our children at a point in my life where my career hadn’t developed, allowed me much more time to enjoy my family.”

However, filming for The Kominsky Method meant spending about three-and-a-half months away from Zeta-Jones and their kids, which meant missing school events and other milestones. Douglas told reporters, “I appreciate their understanding.”

That understanding is born of honesty between Douglas, Zeta-Jones, and their kids as well as the children’s professional aims. Douglas noted that both Dylan and Carys want to be actors, which would make three generations of actors in his family, including his father, Kirk Douglas: “The fact that all of them want to be actors — and they’re all good actors — makes it all enjoyable. They understand the whole system and principles.”

In November, Zeta-Jones told Today, “Both Michael and I have a very open relationship. When you have kids that didn’t ask to be born into a world where [the marriage is] scrutinized or looked into, you’ve got to be open and honest and share things that probably people at the drug store wouldn’t share over the counter.”

Part of that honesty includes admitting that “things are not rosy every day,” Zeta-Jones said at the time, though being open with each other seems to have helped her and Douglas make it this far. We also hope it continues to carry them and their relationship into the future.
