Good news, Grey’s Anatomy fans! We’re about to get even more of the show we love. Per Deadline, ABC has ordered three additional episodes of the current 15th season, bringing the total to an impressive 25 episodes for this broadcast year. We don’t know about you, but that news has us feeling decidedly less dark and twisty about life.
Plus, it’s kind of a big deal in the serialized drama series world. Although fans have grown accustomed to Grey’s airing at least 24 episodes per season, the series has only hit the 25-or-more mark twice before — with 25 episodes back in season three and a whoppin’ 27 back in season two.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that ABC would extend season 15’s order. Grey’s is the network’s No. 1 series for 2018 – ’19. Even after such a long run, the show continues to pull in top ratings, currently sitting at a 3.1 rating with adults 18 to 49. It’s also one of the most-binge-watched streaming series of 2018.
In March, the series is poised to become the longest-running primetime medical drama ever, snagging the top spot from ER. While the series are currently tied in number of seasons, ER only produced 22 episodes or fewer each season. So, Grey’s will officially edge its medical drama predecessor out by the spring thanks to its number of episodes.
It’s already shaping up to be a banner year for the Grey’s family. On Sunday night, Ellen Pompeo and other cast members celebrated the historic Golden Globes win by former costar Sandra Oh (aka the inimitable Cristina Yang).
Oh, who took home the trophy for best actress in a television drama series for her role in Killing Eve, is the first woman of Asian descent to win the award since 1981. And if you ask her former Grey’s family, it’s an honor that’s long overdue.

Pompeo shared a photo posted by Oh of herself alongside her award, saying of her friend, “This is a pretty sweet sight I gotta say…. @IamSandraOh no one deserves this more.”
Oh’s other former costars Kevin McKidd, Camilla Luddington, Kate Walsh and Sarah Drew also celebrated the win — as did Grey’s Anatomy’s series creator Shonda Rhimes, who tweeted, “I am so incredibly happy for @IamSandraOh tonight. Well-deserved. Overdue. She is always best actress, y’all. Always.”
Grey’s returns from its mid-season break on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 8/7c on ABC.
