After an emotional first half of season nine thanks to the untimely death of Pritchett matriarch Dede, Modern Family delivered another surprise before breaking for the holidays: Haley (Sarah Hyland) is pregnant. Now, thanks to a preview of Wednesday’s episode, fans will learn that Haley is pregnant with twins, and of course, the reveal sounds like it’s going to be a pretty amusing moment.
As reported by People magazine, the episode, which will air on Wednesday, shows Haley during a routine checkup, where she thinks she will get to hear her baby’s heartbeat for the first time. Instead, she ends up hearing two heartbeats, but it apparently doesn’t immediately register that two buns are in the oven.
At first, Haley thinks her baby might be some kind of medical marvel, reportedly turning to her mom, Claire, and saying, “A baby with two hearts?”
As it dawns on her, Haley goes on to say, “That’s impossible. It’s a mistake. I can’t have twins. That’s twice as many babies as we were expecting. How are they going to fit in our place? How are they going to fit in my body? One is always going to be awake. I’ll never sleep again. And those double strollers are so wide, I can say goodbye to ever shopping in a boutique.”
Of course, Claire jumps in to calm Haley down (“Haley, everything is going to be OK,” she says at one point) while Haley freaks out (“I’m way over my head,” she responds to Claire).
Claire finds the right words to calm Haley down, telling her, “You’re not alone. As you’re about to find out, being a mom is very complicated. Luckily, there are these instincts that kick in, especially when your kid’s in trouble. So, if you’re overwhelmed, I’m right over your shoulder on the wings of a hummingbird.”
Haley’s pregnancy journey thus far on Modern Family has had its fair share of ups and downs, what with her finding out she was pregnant during a hospital visit to get a tube of lipstick removed from her nose and then telling her family she and her boyfriend, Dylan (Reid Ewing), were going to have a baby right before they all took their yearly Christmas photo. This twins news is yet another exciting development, with the expectation that many more expecting parenting hurdles will have to be jumped by Haley and Dylan in the coming months.
As with all things Modern Family-related, things may not pan out the way viewers expect, but that doesn’t mean it any less hilarious or heartwarming, and Haley’s pregnancy journey is a prime example of that. See how the twins reveal goes down when Modern Family airs this Wednesday night, Jan. 9 at 9/8c on ABC.
