We are all about women supporting women, especially when they celebrate each other’s accomplishments in competitive industries. In a new interview with InStyle, Badass Women issue cover star Melissa McCarthy gushed about Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman and other famous women she admires, not just for their career accomplishments but for their characters.
“I love that Jennifer Aniston, that little nugget,” McCarthy told InStyle, per People. “That’s a person to the soles of her feet. Just solid, good.”
As for Kidman, McCarthy said, “She isn’t going to mince words, isn’t going to try to play the game. She’s got a hell of a picker. She picks [movies] that are really interesting, and she’s not concerned about how they may be seen.” McCarthy added that she felt similarly about Amy Adams, noting, “Amy Adams is the same. I love that she is starting to produce. I would like Amy Adams to run for president. I think the world would be better in general.”
In addition to remarking on these women’s accomplishments and jokingly endorsing Adams for president, McCarthy also reflected on how her day-to-day routine could be improved by someone like Viola Davis. She quipped, “I’d like Viola Davis to wake me up every morning and be like, ‘Here’s your thought for the day,’ and I’d literally write it down.”

Last, but certainly not least, McCarthy said of her friend of 20 years, Octavia Spencer, “She is the same person she has always been.” She added, “Same with Allison Janney. They didn’t change. They’re not adapting for their jobs or their careers. They are exactly, unapologetically as they were.”
McCarthy has garnered a similar reputation for being unapologetically herself, which she also opened up about in her InStyle interview. Per People, McCarthy reflected on experiences she’s had while doing press for her various films when male journalists took the opportunity to body-shame her.
“Years ago, I was at a press conference for either The Heat or Tammy and somebody from a very big organization kept asking me, ‘Why do you always feel the need to be so grotesque?’” McCarthy said. She replied, “‘What are we talking about? I can’t answer your question because I don’t understand it.’ He goes, ‘You look sloppy, you’re not wearing any makeup, your hair is not done, you’re yelling at people.’”
McCarthy wasn’t having it: “I was like, ‘OK, so have you ever asked this of a guy? I’m playing a character. You need to get out more if you don’t think there are real women like that,’” McCarthy said.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t the only time she was body-shamed by the press. She recalled an experience in 2011 during promotion for Bridesmaids when a journalist asked her, “Are you shocked that you actually work in this business at your tremendous size?” She added, “I just remember all the blood drained out of me. I thought, ‘With my tremendous size, I could tackle you so quickly.’”
