We can’t imagine how hard it was for Céline Dion to say goodbye to her husband of 21 years, René Angélil, when he died in 2016. Now, three years after his death, Dion is paying tribute to Angélil with both a sweet social media post and a special moment at her most recent Las Vegas residency show, where she invited her fans to sing along with her in Angélil’s honor.
On what would have been Angélil’s 77th birthday, People reported, Dion introduced a song by Australian singer John Farnham titled “You’re the Voice.” She encouraged her fans to sing along with her while she covered the song, noting that it was Angélil’s birthday and explaining, “This is the greatest gift that I can offer him for his birthday, because what he loved the most in the world is the fans, the music and to see me perform for you.”
Dion went on to help the crowd learn the chorus of the song and rehearse it. Then she prompted, “Are you ready to sing that for René?” When the song finished, she reportedly looked toward the ceiling of the Caesars Palace concert venue and blew a kiss. “Happy birthday, my love,” she said. To the crowd, she added, “I couldn’t have offered him a better gift.”
On Jan. 14 — the three-year anniversary of Angélil’s death — Dion wrote on Twitter, “My dearest René….always with me…..always will be. In loving memory… xx …” She also wrote the caption in French and included a photo of her late husband. Dion posted the same message and photo on Instagram.
In the last three years, Dion has paid tribute to Angélil many times, including when she returned to Vegas following his death.
At the start of that return performance, Dion paid a lengthy tribute to Angélil, starting with a quote that showed on the jumbo screen: “I understand that my career was in a way his masterpiece, his song, his symphony. The idea of leaving it unfinished would have hurt him terribly. I realized that if he ever left us, I would have to continue without him, for him.”
It’s touching to see Dion still so devoted to her late husband and honoring his memory; our hearts go out to her.
