After years of hoping and scant updates about the possibility of another sequel, Princess Diaries fans may finally have something tangible to anticipate. During Thursday’s episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Anne Hathaway confirmed that the Princess Diaries team wants to make a third movie, but they’re being cautious about how they approach it.
“There is a script for the third movie. There is a script,” Hathaway said, reiterating what Princess Diaries author Meg Cabot said in a 2017 interview. “I want to do it,” Hathaway continued. “Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen.”
It’s been 15 years since Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, and unfortunately the cast and crew has had to say goodbye to their director, Gary Marshall, who died in 2016. Hathaway told the crowd on Watch What Happens Live that it’s important to her, Andrews and Martin Chase to get things exactly right if they move forward with a third film in the series.
“It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it,” Hathaway said. “It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”
In 2017, Andrews told BuzzFeed that she was “all for” a third film, noting, “I think we might do it in honor of [Marshall]. Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I’m all for it, so if she’d like to….” At the time, the outlet noted that prior to his death, Marshall revealed there were plans for a third film, but after he passed away, plans stalled.
In the era of reboots and reunions, a third Princess Diaries movie would surely be a hit, especially since its fans are still so into the films more than a decade after their release.
