We’re knee-deep in the 2019 award show season right now, and it couldn’t be more exciting to see who is becoming more and more of a frontrunner in their respective categories with the 2019 Academy Awards getting closer by the day. With favorites like Lady Gaga, Glenn Close, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and so many more all competing in contentious, prestigious categories like best actor, best actress and best director, it’s going to be a nail-biting race this year when it comes to deciding who takes home these coveted awards. But what are the Oscar nominees doing next?
No matter who wins (and goodness knows each of us has our favorites), these nominees have some exciting projects on the horizon. In the spirit of the award season and all the good things to come, let’s take a look at what the 2019 Oscar nominees are working on in the near future.
Lady Gaga
It’s unclear whether Lady Gaga will take up another acting project anytime soon despite being nominated for best actress for her performance in A Star Is Born, but does it really matter? She has commitments elsewhere: namely, a residency at the Park MGM in Las Vegas that will have her going until November.
Melissa McCarthy
After her best actress-nominated performance in Can You Ever Forgive Me, McCarthy will be seen in The Kitchen, a ’70s-set crime drama about a group of gangsters’ wives who carry on their husbands’ work while the men are incarcerated, and the action-comedy Superintelligence, which reteams her with husband and director Ben Falcone.
Bradley Cooper
Best actor nominee Bradley Cooper will move from A Star Is Born to portraying a real-life famous musician, Leonard Bernstein, in the recently announced biopic Bernstein as well as getting to work on Atlantic Wall, a WWII-set drama about a solider trapped in enemy territory the day before D-Day.
Olivia Colman
Best actress nominee Olivia Colman has no new projects lined up that are in production, but (but!) you will be able to catch her taking over for fellow Brit Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II on Netflix’s hit series The Crown when season three premieres in 2019.
Amy Adams
Best supporting actress nominee Amy Adams is slated to start working on the Enchanted sequel, Disenchanted, soon.
Regina King
King is on the fast track to scooping up an Oscar for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk and will be keeping that momentum going with HBO’s new series Watchmen (based on the graphic novel of the same name) and in the upcoming thriller All the Way With You, about a woman who helps a man on his quest for revenge even though she is supposed to kill him.
Mahershala Ali
Favored to win best supporting actor for his performance in Green Book, Mahershala Ali will be seen later in 2019 in Alita: Battle Angel and is reportedly working on a potential secret music project that could surface in the near future.
Adam Driver
Driver is nominated for best supporting actor for his performance in BlacKkKlansman and could very well take home the statue considering how well his performance has been received. Up next: Driver will return for Star Wars: Episode IX as lead antagonist Kylo Ren and will be seen in the upcoming 9/11 drama The Report.
Rachel Weisz
Rachel Weisz will move on from her best supporting actress-nominated performance in The Favourite to the film Cloud One, the plot of which is still unknown, though it is being billed as a sci-fi drama — color us very intrigued.
Sam Rockwell
After winning best supporting actor for his role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in 2018, Sam Rockwell is nominated in the same category for his turn as former president George W. Bush in Vice. In the coming months to a year, you will be able to see Rockwell in the civil rights drama The Best of Enemies costarring Taraji P. Henson and in theaters in April as well as the FX miniseries Fosse/Verdon, about famed dancers and real-life couple Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, which premieres in April too.
Emma Stone
The Oscars have been good to Emma Stone in recent years, with a best actress win for La La Land in 2017 and this year, a best supporting actress nomination for The Favourite. Next, Stone will be seen in Zombieland 2 and later as the iconic Disney villain Cruella de Vil in Cruella.
Sam Elliott
After his riveting, best supporting actor-nominated turn in A Star Is Born, Sam Elliott will return to his duties as one of the stars of Netflix’s The Ranch and will lend his voice to the historical docudrama The Gettysburg Address.
Richard E. Grant
Grant has scored a nomination for best supporting actor in Can You Ever Forgive Me? and will be taking those Oscar-nominated talents to future projects like Star Wars: Episode IX and an Australian comedy-drama costarring Sam Neill (of Jurassic Park fame), Palm Beach.
Spike Lee
Spike Lee has finally (finally!) nabbed a best director nomination for his 2018 film, BlacKkKlansman. Although he currently has no new directing projects teed up, he will be producing a few indie films and hopefully (hopefully!) taking a well-deserved rest.
Alfonso Cuarón
Cuarón is not only a previous best director winner (he won in 2014 for Gravity), but he finds himself nominated once again for his semiautobiographical film, Roma. Next, Cuarón will be working on the mysterious project Ascension with Casey Affleck, which is being billed as a TV movie.
Adam McKay
Hot on the heels of Vice, which earned McKay a best director nomination this year, it looks like Bad Blood is next up for the director. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, this long-gestating film will be yet another part-biopic/part-based-on-a-true-story film about Elizabeth Holmes, founder of startup Theranos, and the scandal that brought about its downfall.
The 2019 Academy Awards will air on ABC on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 8/7c.
