Abby Lee Miller Shares Her Emotional Journey in New Dance Moms Trailer

If there’s one thing the last few years have taught us, it’s that you can never count Abby Lee Miller out. In a surprisingly emotional new Dance Moms: Resurrection trailer released Tuesday, Miller gives fans a glimpse at her new reality.

Not surprisingly, the trailer speaks largely to one fact: Miller is a fighter.

The teaser starts just after Miller’s one-year prison sentence for bankruptcy fraud at the Federal Correctional Complex. In April 2018, an emergency back surgery led to a rare diagnosis for Miller of Burkitt lymphoma in her spinal column. “In an instant, your life changes completely,” she says in the trailer as scenes show her in an ambulance and, later, the hospital. “I was ready to go back to work and start my life over, and now I can’t even walk.”

Miller, who has documented her cancer battle on social media, may have a flair for the dramatic — but the severity of her condition is very real. In one scene from the trailer, a doctor confirms that Miller would have died if her diagnosis and treatment had come any later.

But as another doctor notes, not even cancer of this kind can hold Miller down. “Abby has the tools. It’s about the determination. It’s about grit,” the doctor says, adding, “It’s about controlling your destiny.”

As for Miller, she’s ready to get back to doing what she does best. “I need to get back to teaching, and I need to get back to screaming at children. I need to get back to my roots. I’m going to take these kids right back to Pittsburgh,” she says.

Miller doesn’t seem to be wasting any time getting her newest group of dance recruits into fighting form, revealing, “I need to be ready for that first competition. We need to make a statement on that stage that the ALDC is back… and watch out.”

In December 2018, Miller confirmed via Instagram that she was returning for season eight of the dance competition series that made her famous. Prior to departing in 2017, she’d served as the head coach (and, let’s be real, star) of the show since it premiered in 2011.

Although she has undeniably butted heads with many mothers of her students over the years — a group even took their daughters out of ALDC to form “The Irreplaceables” — Miller’s success with students is equally well-documented.

Among her star pupils of the past are tween pop sensation JoJo Siwa and Maddie Ziegler, who has gone on to appear in music videos, go on tour with Sia, appear in feature films and more.

So, we’re certainly expecting big things from Miller in this new chapter of her life and of the Dance Moms franchise.

Miller told her new pupils, “There’s people that counted me out. Thought I was finished. Considered the ALDC dead. Well, I fought hard to be here, and you have to be a fighter too. You have to fight to get those legs straight. Fight to get better feet. You have to fight to be a champion.”
