It’s the end of an era, folks. On Tuesday, at the 2019 Television Critics Association press tour, ABC announced that Modern Family had been renewed for its 11th and final season. For longtime fans of the award-winning show, knowing that this beloved sitcom will be ending with its 11th season is a bit surreal. Here’s how the announcement played out and how two of the cast members reacted to the news.
As reported by Variety, ABC President Karey Burke said of the series ending,”[Creators] Chris [Lloyd] and Steve [Levitan] have created one of the most seminal and iconic comedies in television history” and went on to tease: “In its final season, there will be more milestone events that anyone who has been a fan of the series won’t want to miss.”
Lloyd, also present at the press tour, added, “[F]or 10 years, our characters have bravely faced turning points in life and moved through them to great personal enrichment; we have chosen a different path by doing one more season of Modern Family.”
The confirmation of the series’ end is somewhat expected. After more than a decade on the air (a rarity these days, even for a sitcom) and numerous Emmys, it feels natural that Modern Family would choose to end on a high note. Fans have watched this show tackle hot topics of the day, from marriage equality to immigration to what it means to be a blended family today and now. With the cast getting older, it feels like many big narrative arcs are reaching natural conclusions; it’s time.
Will be hard to say goodbye. Love my family. ❤️ @ModernFamhttps://t.co/9RxSBbwAoC

It seems two of Modern Family‘s cast members, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (who plays Mitchell Pritchett on the show) and Rico Rodriguez (who plays Manny Delgado) hopped on Twitter to voice their feelings about the big announcement.
“Will be hard to say goodbye. Love my family,” Ferguson tweeted, while Rodriguez wrote, “What an amazing ride this has been! Can’t wait to return for a final season with my @ModernFam.”

Currently in its 10th season, fans can expect the 11th season to arrive right on schedule in fall 2019. Although Burke alluded to big milestones still ahead for the characters of Modern Family, there have been no big clues yet as to what we can expect — although you can probably guess we might get some juicy teasers closer to the season 11 premiere date. Until then, though, we’ll have to content ourselves with season 10, which is currently on the air and will end in April.
