We’re not the only ones who got emotional over the news that Andy Cohen welcomed his first child late on Monday. On Tuesday, Cohen’s longtime friend Kelly Ripa opened up about Cohen becoming a dad and got misty recalling the unique way she was present for the birth of his son.
On Live With Kelly & Ryan, Ripa spoke with cohost Ryan Seacrest as well as the studio audience about her feelings on Cohen and his newborn son, Benjamin Allen. “I was honored to practically be in the delivery room, on the phone with my friend, Bruce Bozzi, who was actually in the delivery room,” Ripa recounted. “[Andy] named the baby after his grandfather, Ben Allen. He’s obviously over the moon. He’s in love. He looks, I have to say, like he’s been born to do this his whole life.”
For Ripa, it seems like Cohen was always meant to be a dad because he had been another father figure at times to her kids with husband Mark Consuelos: Michael, Lola and Joaquin.
“I’m getting emotional,” she continued. “He is a great, great family man. And I am so so happy and thrilled for you both. This baby is the luckiest baby, and Andy is the luckiest dad. The whole Cohen family, we are all so happy and thrilled for you.”

And on a characteristically thoughtful note, Ripa ended her comments with a “shoutout to the surrogates out there,” saying, “[They’re] so generous and selfless. We thank you as well.”

In addition to her sweet comments about Cohen becoming a father, Ripa posted a celebratory photo on her Instagram of a rainbow cake with the topper “It’s a boy” in sparkly blue lettering.
“It sure is!” Ripa captioned the photo, referring to the topper and continuing, “Welcome Benjamin! We’ve been waiting for you!!! Mazel Tov @bravoandy.”

Cohen announced the arrival of Benjamin on his Instagram late on Monday night, posting a black-and-white photo of himself cradling his son and captioning the photo with: “WOW! This is my son, Benjamin Allen Cohen. He is 9 lbs 2 ounces !! 20 inches !! Born at 6:35 pm, PT. He is named after my grandfather Ben Allen. I’m in love. And speechless. And eternally grateful to an incredible surrogate. And I’m a dad. Wow.”
Wow, indeed. Without a doubt, we’re excited to see what Cohen’s life as parent looks like in the months and years to come.
