As more of our favorite stars join social media platforms like Instagram, it’s exciting to get hints into their lives, even if those hints are super-small. Michelle Pfeiffer joined Instagram in January, though she admitted in a new interview with InStyle that the thought of opening up on social media is frightening.
“I’ve spent my entire life avoiding, doing as little as possible, in terms of exposure — literally the least that I could get away with as an actress,” Pfeiffer told InStyle, as reported by Entertainment Tonight.
Although sharing even a small piece of herself via Instagram is “terrifying for [her],” Pfeiffer was moved to create an account when her Maleficent 2 costar Elle Fanning reportedly wrote her a message that she had no way to reply to online. Pfeiffer explained, “It was so sweet, and I wanted to respond, but I couldn’t. I had no format. I didn’t tweet. I didn’t have Instagram. I had nothing.”
She continued, “But I’ve started paying more attention. And I’ve been following other celebrities who I think are as private as I am, and even they are venturing into the Instagram world. So I’m dipping my toe in. I’ll be very tentative in the beginning. But in a weird way, I’m kind of excited about it.”

Pfeiffer kicked off her Instagram tenure with a throwback video to her role as Catwoman in 1992’s Batman Returns. She captioned it, fittingly, “MEOW Instagram.” The post has earned over 61,000 likes since Jan. 16, and Pfeiffer has gained 96,000 followers in less than two weeks. She’s since posted more throwbacks, photos of her cat, Bella Blue, an anniversary photo with her husband, David E. Kelley, a sneak peek at her character in Maleficent 2 and even some fan art.
She also shared her March InStyle cover, writing, “Thank you @instylemagazine and @laurabrown99 for featuring me on the March cover. Even with my ‘nearly Garboesque privacy’ ha, the team made me feel very comfortable in the spotlight.”
