Sunday was a big night for the cast and crew of A Star Is Born. While Lady Gaga was representing the film at the Grammys, where she performed “Shallow” and took home two trophies for the song, her costar and director Bradley Cooper was representing the film on the other side of the ocean at the annual BAFTAs. During his own acceptance speech for the music of A Star Is Born, Cooper made sure to thank his girlfriend, Irina Shayk, for being so patient with him during the recording process for the film.
According to the Daily Mail, Cooper, Gaga and Lukas Nelson were awarded the BAFTA for best original music. In Cooper’s acceptance speech, he first thanked Gaga: “I got to fulfill a dream I never thought would happen. I share this with Lady Gaga tonight. The music was the heartbeat of this film.”
Then, he gave a shoutout to his longtime girlfriend, Shayk: “I also need to thank Irina for putting up with me while I was trying to make music in our basement for a year.”
We really appreciate Cooper’s sense of humor about singing for this film, but Shayk seemed more proud than anything. When A Star Is Born was announced as the winner for best original music, Shayk gave Cooper a standing ovation from the crowd.
After his win, Cooper chatted with Edie Bowman backstage. He said, “I remember writing and arranging ‘Black Eyes,’ the first song in the film and sending it to Lady Gaga almost sheepishly. And then she was like, ‘Yeah, no, I think you’re right.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I think I want the movie to open with that. Is that crazy?‘”
He continued, “And then Lukas spending so much time with me in my basement. I mean, literally, for months and months just coming up with music and working on ideas.” He said, “I can’t say enough about what Lady Gaga did, but to be part of that group of musicians was incredible.”
