Grey’s Anatomy Fans Will Soon Meet Another Derek Shepherd Sister

The Grey’s Anatomy family just keeps on growing! Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) may be long gone, but his legacy continues to live on — obviously through his wife, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), and the couple’s kids, but also through his sister Amelia (Caterina Scorsone). And apparently now through “Kate” Shepherd too.

Wait, who’s Kate, you ask? Well, per Deadline, The Gifted star Amy Acker just signed on to play a recurring guest role as Kathleen Shepherd, the fourth sister of the late, great Dr. McDreamy.

While it may seem out-of-the-blue to have another member of Derek’s family appear years after his tragic death, it shouldn’t shock fans who’ve been keeping up with the NBC medi-drama. In recent weeks, the storyline surrounding Derek’s fellow surgeon/sister Amelia has been picking up speed.

In fact, according to Deadline, Acker will be bringing Kate to Grey’s specifically for an episode focused on Amelia. The hot mess express of the Shepherd siblings, Amelia once again finds herself in a tricky situation as of late. Thankfully, it has nothing to do with drugs and/or brain tumors. Rather, she is navigating her relationship with Owen (Kevin McKidd) now that Teddy (Kim Raver) is back in the picture… and pregnant, to boot.

Wondering how Kate might help, especially given the Shepherd women’s reputation for meddling? Here’s a fun fact: She’s also a doctor! You might say it’s the family business. Per Entertainment Weekly, Kate is a psychiatrist. So, at this point, it’s unclear whether she’ll be appearing in a professional capacity, simply visiting her sibling (and presumably her sister-in-law as well) or both.

Although Kate was first mentioned way back in season three, we have little to go on outside of that initial reference. There was talk of the sisters following Derek’s death, but a visit from Kate never transpired.

Outside Amelia, Grey’s fans have already met Derek’s other two sisters: Liz (Neve Campbell) and Nancy (Embeth Davidtz).

In addition to The Gifted, you may have seen Acker on Suits, Person of Interest, CSI, Alias or Angel. Her arc on Grey’s is slated for the current season, which airs on Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
