Marriage, pregnancy, being a grown-up — all tough but very rewarding undertakings. Judging by the just-debuted Netflix trailer for Amy Schumer’s new stand-up comedy special, Amy Schumer: Growing, all those things can also be funny as hell in the right hands. To be clear, those hands belong to Schumer, who pulls no punches when talking about everything from being the oldest bridesmaid in her social circle to what irks her about expecting (spoiler alert: a lot). So take solace, Schumer fans! She may have had to cancel the remainder of her comedy tour due to complications from pregnancy sickness, but you’ll soon be able to catch her on Netflix.
In the trailer, Schumer addresses a packed house in a Chicago theater. The comedian, who said I do last February to chef Chris Fischer, reveals that the novelty of being the single friend may have worn off in the few years preceding her wedding. “Everybody got married. I was the last one,” Schumer says. “I think I don’t have to be a bridesmaid anymore. When you get in your late 30s, there’s just no dignity to it. It’s me in a Coachella flower halo, hoping I’m not the bridesmaid with the biggest arm.” (Same, Schumer. Same.)
Of course, that’s not to say she entered into marriage with sweeping romanticism either. “I got married, yay! In movies and TV shows, the guy always gets down on one knee, and the girl’s always shocked. ‘Ahh! I didn’t even know you liked me! I’m still on Bumble,’” Schumer joked, feigning doe-eyed surprise.
As the title of the special would suggest, though, much of Schumer’s comedic fodder revolves around her first pregnancy. If you’ve been following Schumer at all since she made her pregnancy announcement last fall, it should come as no surprise she has some choice things to say about the experience.
“Here’s the thing: You’re pregnant, but you don’t change who you are. I hate women who start to act really precious. You don’t stop being you, you know? You don’t stop working,” she jokes in the trailer, pausing for effect before adding, “Or drinking.”
Later in the trailer, Schumer speaks directly to women in the audience who had glowing pregnancies.
“If you had a good pregnancy, like, if you’re someone who enjoyed being pregnant, I just hope your car flips over. That’s what I wish for you,” she quips. Who can blame her for being a little salty, really? On Saturday, Schumer announced her doctor had not cleared her to fly for the final leg of her comedy tour. As she explained, complications from her hyperemesis condition have been making Schumer so sick that she remains nauseous and/or vomiting nearly around the clock.
But hey, she’s in her third trimester, so baby Schumer-Fischer should be here soon. Plus, she’s got another birth to celebrate in the meantime — this comedy special, which hits Netflix on Tuesday, March 19.
