Just because two people have chemistry in a performance, it doesn’t mean they’re in love. On Wednesday, Lady Gaga addressed romance rumors with Bradley Cooper, noting that she and her A Star Is Born costar are both actors. Rumors of an alleged romance between the pair reached a fever pitch after Sunday’s Oscars, where they performed an intimate duet of the song “Shallow” from the film’s soundtrack, which later took home the award for best original song.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel asked Gaga about the rumors. Her response? An intense eye roll.
“First of all, social media, quite frankly, is the toilet of the internet and what it’s done to pop culture is abysmal,” Gaga said. “People saw love and guess what? That’s what we wanted you to see! This is a love song, ‘Shallow’. The movie A Star Is Born [is] a love story. We worked so hard. We worked all week on that performance.”
She explained, “From a performance perspective, it was so important to both of us that we were connected the entire time.” She noted, “I’ve had my arms wrapped around Tony Bennett for three years, touring the world. When you’re singing love songs, that’s what you want people to feel.”
Kimmel joked, “Are you having an affair with Tony Bennett? Be honest,” referring to Gaga working with Bennett on the 2014 album Cheek to Cheek: Live and live performances with him, but Gaga was having none of it. Not only jokingly dispelling rumors of a romance with Bennett for the sake of a laugh, Gaga continued on that track by jokingly dispelling the Cooper romance rumors.
“I’m an artist! I guess we did a good job. Fooled you!” she said, remarking on the flurry of social media commentary about her Oscars performance with Cooper, but also the romance rumors that have swirled around them both since press for A Star Is Born began last year.
This isn’t the first time that actors have faced relationship speculation after starring in a romantic film together, but it’s important to remember that Gaga and Cooper are real people whose lives aren’t dictated by the roles they play. In fact, Cooper attended the 91st annual Academy Awards with his partner, model Irina Shayk, with whom he shares a daughter. Until recently, Gaga was also in a romantic relationship — but not with Cooper. Gaga split from her now ex-fiancé Christian Carino, whom she had been dating for a little over two years. The split came right before the Oscars, only fueling incorrect theories that Gaga and Cooper were romantically involved.
Now that awards season is over for the year, we hope these two can finally put these rumors to rest and move on.
